Northwest is het nieuwe, inspirerende album van pianist Jan Gunnar Hoff, bassist Jasper Somsen en drummer Carsten Lindholm.

Een Noorse pianist, een Nederlandse bassist en een Deense drummer zijn te horen op hun samenwerkings-debuut-CD Northwest. Drie muzikale karakters die zeer goed bij elkaar passen. Elke musicus heeft een gelijk aandeel in hun muzikale-drie-eenheid en voegt een onlosmakelijk deel toe aan de muziek, waar contrasten elkaar aanvullen en versterken. Het trio creëert hierdoor een compacte sound waarbij ritmische en melodische frases moeiteloos in elkaar grijpen.

Deze drie musici hebben hun sporen binnen de jazz ruimschoots verdiend. In 2023 besloten ze concerten te geven. Deze werden zo’n succes, dat in september van dat jaar het album Northwest is opgenomen in een studio in Kopenhagen.

Het resultaat is een weloverwogen CD met acht composities, gecomponeerd door Gunnar Hoff, Somsen en Lindholm. Het album opent met Autumn Breeze dat, net zoals One Last Chance, typische Gunnar Hoff-werken zijn. Melodieus, gedragen en met een licht melancholies timbre. Intens en poëtisch gespeeld en subtiel ondersteund door bas (doortastende solo) en drums. Beneath the Surface (opgedragen aan pianist Enrico Pieranunzi) en de ballade So Long (met elegant impressionistisch intro) werden door Somsen gecomponeerd en sluiten qua intensiteit aan bij de werken van Gunnar Hoff. De inventieve drummer Lindholm componeerde One Last Chance. In zekere zin een ritmisch werk met strakke accenten en een glooiend, verhalend thema.

Opvallend is hoe strak het samenspel blijft in de stukken Free Flight I & Free Flight II. Twee vrije en geïmproviseerde composities, waar korte ritmische en melodische fragmenten elkaar afwisselen, aanvullen en versterken en als een muzikaal prisma samenkomen in één welluidend timbre. Vakwerk!

Met het album Northwest bewijzen Gunnar Hoff, Somsen en Lindholm dat ze de onmiskenbare ambassadeurs zijn van de Scandinavische jazz waar harmonische melodieën, gedegen samenspel en coherente uitvoeringen de belangrijkste ingrediënten zijn.

Northwest is the new, inspiring album by pianist Jan Gunnar Hoff, bassist Jasper Somsen and drummer Carsten Lindholm.

A Norwegian pianist, a Dutch bassist and a Danish drummer can be heard on their collaborative debut CD Northwest. Three musical characters that fit together very well. Each musician has an equal share in their musical trinity and adds an inseparable part to the music, where contrasts complement and reinforce each other. The trio thus creates a compact sound in which rhythmic and melodic phrases effortlessly intertwine.

These three musicians have more than earned their spurs in jazz. In 2023 they decided to give concerts. These were such a success that in September of that year the album Northwest was recorded in a studio in Copenhagen.

The result is a well-considered CD with eight compositions, composed by Gunnar Hoff, Somsen and Lindholm. The album opens with Autumn Breeze which, like One Last Chance, are typical Gunnar Hoff compositions. Melodic, dignified and with a slightly melancholic timbre. Intensely and poetically played and subtly supported by bass (decisive solo) and drums. Beneath the Surface (dedicated to pianist Enrico Pieranunzi) and the ballad So Long (with an elegant impressionistic piano intro) were composed by Somsen and in terms of intensity they are similar to the works of Gunnar Hoff. The inventive drummer Lindholm composed One Last Chance. In a sense a rhythmic work with tight accents and a rolling, narrative theme.

It is striking how tight the interplay remains in the pieces Free Flight I & Free Flight II. Two free and improvised compositions, where short rhythmic and melodic fragments alternate, complement and strengthen each other and come together like a musical prism in one melodious timbre. Craftsmanship!

On the album Northwest, Gunnar Hoff, Somsen and Lindholm prove that they are the unmistakable ambassadors of Scandinavian jazz where harmonic melodies, solid interplay and coherent performances are the most important ingredients.
