Het album Dissolve is een drie-luik van de Amerikaanse (jazz)componist Richard Nelson dat hij opnam met het Makrokosmos Orchestra.

Dissolve is het nieuwe album dat gitarist/componist Richard Nelson uitbracht met het Makrokosmos Orchestra. Een in New York gevestigde kleine bigband van zo’n 15 musici waaronder Nelson en medeoprichter, saxofonist Tim O’Dell. Voor het album componeerde hij Dissolve, Float en Cohere. Drie doorgecomponeerde werken waarin een breed scala aan stijlen en invloeden te horen is uit de klassieke en geïmproviseerde muziek. Muziek die uitdaagt en prikkelt in een aaneensluiting van thema’s, variaties en improvisaties. Verschillende muzikale lagen schuiven over en door elkaar heen en worden ingekleurd door magistrale harmonieën, overgoten met ferme solo’s en gelardeerd met georganiseerde chaos. Het geheel wordt rijkelijk ondersteund door compact drum- en baswerk. Opmerkelijk zijn de delicate bongo’s, gepeeld met een strakke ritmiek die mooi verpakt zijn in een fraaie (surfsound)galm, waardoor er een speelse touch wordt toegevoegd.

De composities zijn gecomponeerd vanuit een orkestrale visie waar de combinaties van instrumenten en het gebruik van harmonieën de kleur van het orkest vormt. Deze instrument-combinaties volgen elkaar snel op, waardoor er een kleurrijk palet en meerdere dimensies ontstaan die de muziek interessant maakt, maar ook complex, waardoor wellicht de gemiddelde luisteraar snel afhaakt. Maar wie verder luistert, wordt getrakteerd op inventieve, organisch-avontuurlijke muziek in de breedste zin van het muzikale woord. Muziek die boeit en bij elke luisterbeurt boeiender wordt!

Richard Nelson werd geboren in San Francisco en woont tegenwoordig in Maine waar hij tot aan zijn pensionering hoogleraar muziek was aan de Sonic Arts and Composition aan de Universiteit van Maine. Hij nam CD’s op met het Large Ensemble, zijn Quintet en Trio en een album met het Aardvark Jazz Orchestra. Daarnaast deelde hij het podium met grootheden als trombonist Slide Hampton, saxofonist Joe Henderson, pianist George Duke (!) en gitarist Joe Pass en recentelijk met pianiste Geri Allen en saxofonist Ricky Ford.

Richard Nelson is een componist die met een ongelimiteerd compositorisch vermogen diverse stijlen zo samenvoegt, dat er een geheel nieuwe stijl ontstaat. Het album Dissolve is daarvan het overtuigende bewijs.

The album Dissolve is a triptych by the American (jazz) composer Richard Nelson that he recorded with the Makrokosmos Orchestra.

Dissolve is the new album by guitarist/composer Richard Nelson released with the Makrokosmos Orchestra. A New York-based small big band of about 15 musicians including Nelson and co-founder, saxophonist Tim O’Dell. For the album he composed Dissolve, Float and Cohere. Three through-composed works in which a wide range of styles and influences can be heard from classical and improvised music. Music that challenges and stimulates in a series of themes, variations and improvisations. Different musical layers slide over and through each other and are colored by masterful harmonies, topped with strong solos and interspersed with organized chaos. This is richly supported by compact drum and bass work. Remarkable are the delicate bongos, played with a tight rhythm that are beautifully packaged in a lovely (surf sound) reverb, adding a playful touch.

The compositions are composed from an orchestral vision where the combinations of instruments and the use of harmonies form the color of the orchestra. These instrument combinations follow each other in quick succession, creating a colorful palette and multiple dimensions that makes the music interesting, but also complex, which may quickly put the average listener off. But anyone who listens further will be treated to inventive, organic-adventurous music in the broadest sense of the musical language. Music that captivates and becomes more fascinating with every time you listen!

Richard Nelson was born in San Francisco and currently lives in Maine where he was professor of music at the Sonic Arts and Composition at the University of Maine until his retirement. He recorded CDs with the Large Ensemble, his Quintet and Trio and an album with the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra. He also shared the stage with greats such as trombonist Slide Hampton, saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist George Duke (!) and guitarist Joe Pass and recently with pianist Geri Allen and saxophonist Ricky Ford.

Richard Nelson is a composer who, with an unlimited compositional ability, combines various styles in such a way that a completely new style is created. The album Dissolve is convincing proof of this.
