Adriana: Haar portret, Haar leven, Haar muziek is een bijzondere uitgave waarin de (blokfluit)muziek van de 17de eeuw centraal staat. De tijd waarin Adriana vanden Bergh leefde en werd geschilderd door Jacob Adriaensz Backer (1608-1651).

Dat deze Adriana een jonge blokfluitvirtuoze was blijkt uit de beginregels van het testament van vader Jan vanden Bergh, waarin hij verwijst naar Backer’s schilderij waarop Adriana te zien is met bladmuziek en blokfluiten naast haar op een tafel. Bovendien schreef de Amsterdamse muziekuitgever Paulus Matthijsz een opdracht voor Adriana in de uitgave van Der goden fluit-hemel. Met deze gegevens gaat musicoloog en muziekjournalist Thiemo Wind op zoek naar het verhaal en identiteit achter deze 17de eeuwse Amsterdamse blokfluitiste en vertelt erover in het boek Adriana: Haar portret, Haar leven, Haar muziek.

Dit verhaal vormt de inspiratiebron voor Erik Bosgraaf en het Ensemble Cordevento om een uitgekiende selectie te maken van 17de eeuws Nederlands, Duits en Italiaans repertoire. Muziek van componisten uit de Lage Landen waaronder Sweelinck, Jacob Van Eyck, Padbrué en De Vois of de Italianen Rossi, Uccellini en Merula wiens muziek door Matthijsz werd geïmporteerd en uitgegeven. Maar ook een werk van de Duitse componist en vioolvirtuoos Johann Schop die het werk Ballet componeerde, met weelderige variaties. Bijzonder is ook Symposia in Nuptias van de Haarlemse componist Cornelis Padbrué wiens bruiloftsdansen wellicht hebben geklonken tijdens de bruiloft van Adriana en Jan Verstegen. Wat overigens ook geldt voor Avanti Brando van de Italiaanse componist Buonamente, die met deze melodieuze composities de bruiloftsvreugde moet hebben verhoogd. Het overbekende thema La Follia, met zijn karakteristieke baslijn, is door veel componisten bewerkt. Een vaststaande baslijn met akkoorden-schema en thema, uitgewerkt tot steeds moeilijker wordende variaties. Een compositie-techniek die veel voorkwam in de Barok. Iets soortgelijks treffen we aan in Romanesca van Italiaanse componist Salamone Rossi, die prachtige variaties componeerde over de (Romanesca)-baslijn in twee sonates.

Het Ensemble Cordevento is voor de gelegenheid in uitgebreide en verschillende bezettingen te horen op viool, blokfluit, barok- en renaissance gitaar, viola da gamba, cello, theorbe en klavecimbel. Erik Bosgraaf is artistiek leider en bespeelt zo’n 17 verschillende soorten blokfluiten. Zijn virtuoze spel vormt de kern van de muziek waarin hij wordt begeleid door een ijzersterk ensemble dat schittert in doorwrochte uitvoeringen, die zowel subtiel als krachtig zijn door een coherente en transparante eenheid. De CD zit verscholen in een prachtig begeleidend boekwerk (125 pagina’s), waarin alle gespeelde werken worden beschreven, aangevuld met (schilderij)foto’s en natuurlijk het verhaal van Adriana: Haar portret, Haar leven, Haar muziek, wat innemend en enthousiast wordt verteld door Thiemo Wind.

Adriana: Her Portrait, Her Life, Her Music is the latest project by recorder player Erik Bosgraaf with the Ensemble Cordevento with works from the 17th Century.

Adriana: Her portrait, Her life, Her music is a special publication focusing on the (recorder) music of the 17th century. The time in which Adriana vanden Bergh lived and was painted by Jacob Adriaensz Backer (1608-1651).

Adriana was a young recorder virtuoso which is evident from the opening lines of father Jan vanden Bergh’s will, in which he refers to Backer’s painting, showing Adriana with sheet music and recorders lying on a table. In addition, the Amsterdam music publisher Paulus Matthijsz wrote a dedication for Adriana in the publication of Der goden fluit-hemel (The Gods Flute Heaven). With this information, musicologist and music journalist Thiemo Wind searches for the story and identity behind this 17th century Amsterdam recorder player and writes about her in the book Adriana: Her portrait, Her life, Her music.

This story is the source of inspiration for Erik Bosgraaf and the Ensemble Cordevento to make a great selection of 17th century Dutch, German and Italian repertoire. Music by composers from the Low Countries, including Sweelinck, Jacob Van Eyck, Padbrué and De Vois or the Italians Rossi, Uccellini and Merula whose music was imported and published by Matthijsz. But also a work by the German composer and violin virtuoso Johann Schop who composed the work Ballet, with lush variations. Very special is also Symposia in Nuptias by the Haarlem composer Cornelis Padbrué, whose wedding dances may have been performed during the wedding of Adriana and Jan Verstegen. This also applies to Avanti Brando by Italian composer Buonamente, who must have increased the wedding joy with these melodious compositions. The well-known theme La Follia, with its characteristic bass line, has been adapted by many composers. A fixed bass line with chord progression and theme, developed into increasingly difficult variations. A composition technique that was common in the Baroque. We find something similar in Romanesca by Italian composer Salamone Rossi, who composed beautiful variations on the (Romanesca) bass line in two sonatas.

For the occasion, the Ensemble Cordevento can be heard in extensive and different settings on violin, recorder, baroque and Renaissance guitar, viola da gamba, cello, theorbo and harpsichord. Erik Bosgraaf is artistic director and plays about 17 different types of recorders. His virtuoso playing forms the core of the music in which he is accompanied by a tight ensemble that shines in well-thought-out performances, which are both subtle and powerful through a coherent and transparent unity. The CD is hidden in a beautiful accompanying book (125 pages), in which all the compositions are described, supplemented with photos and of course Adriana’s story: Her portrait, Her life, Her music, which is told in an engaging and enthusiastic way by Thiemo Wind.
