Op het album Fathers & Daughters maken pianiste Anna Fedorova en altvioliste Dana Zemtsov een reis door de generaties van hun beider families. De ouders van Anna zijn pianisten en professoren en de ouders van Dana zijn altviolisten. Beide ouders leerden elkaar kennen op het Conservatorium in Moskou. Tegenwoordig wonen ze in Nederland. Door hun jarenlange vriendschap merkten Anna Fedorova en Dana Zemtsov de overeenkomsten van hun opvoeding en achtergrond op, die al eerder resulteerde in het album Silhouttes.

Nu zijn ze samen met hun vaders te horen op het album Fathers & Daughters. Op deze CD worden alle combinaties gevormd: elke dochter met haar vader, de vaders samen, de dochters samen en beide dochters met hun vaders. Vader Borys Federov en Mikhail Zemtsov zijn niet alleen uitvoerend te horen, maar ook als componist.

Het album opent met het schitterende Amarcord, Childhood Memories (Jeugdherinneringen) van Borys Federov. Een innige compositie die schitterend wordt uitgevoerd door dochters Anne en Dana. Een impressionistisch en Poulenciaans aandoend werk met een rijke chromatiek, plotselinge wendingen, uitgesponnen in een muzikaal landschap van Jeugdherinnering. Het daaropvolgende Melodie im Alten Stil werd gecomponeerd door Yevgeni Zemtsov, de grootvader van Dana. Een liefdes-melodie die hij schreef voor zijn grote liefde Liudmila, Dana’s grootmoeder. Een bijna verstilde, mijmerende melodie die met diepgang en inleving wordt uitgevoerd. Fraai is ook het duet Viola Sonata van Nikolay Rosvalets dat met verve wordt gespeeld door vader en dochter Zemtsov. Hoogtepunt is wel het traditionele Shalom Aleichem. Een Joods liedje, gespeeld door vader en dochter Zemtsov. Een uitvoering waar bij de twee vioollijnen verhalend om elkaar heen krullen, elkaar aanvullen en liefdevol omarmen in een prachtig Jiddisch timbre. Iets soortgelijks treffen we aan in het wonderschoon uitgevoerde Elegy van Glazunov. Een componist die aansluit bij de Russische muziekopvatting van Het Machtige Hoopje. Een collectief van vijf Russische componisten (waaronder Moessorgski, Borodin en Rimski-Korsakov) die onder leiding van Balakirev de Russiche folkklore in hun composities verwerkten. Het album sluit af met Mikhail Zemtsov’s Tango Suite. Een werk dat is gecomponeerd in navolging van de Tango Nuevo. Een stijl die Astor Piazzolla begin jaren ’50 ontwikkelde. Hij bezorgde de tango meer diepgang en de stijl verhuisde daarmee van de danszaal naar de concertzaal. De Tango Suite is een wervelende afsluiting van een dynamisch twee-familie-album waarop originaliteit en uitstekende uitvoeringen elkaar moeiteloos verbinden.

The album Fathers & Daughters is a beautiful musical exposé of the Federova and Zemtsov families.

On the album Fathers & Daughters, pianist Anna Fedorova and violist Dana Zemtsov take a journey through the generations of both their families. Anna’s parents are pianists and professors and Dana’s parents are violists. Both parents met at the Moscow Conservatory. Nowadays they live in the Netherlands. Through their many years of friendship, Anna Fedorova and Dana Zemtsov noticed the similarities of their upbringing and background, which previously resulted in the album Silhouttes.

Now they can be heard together with their fathers on the album Fathers & Daughters. On this CD all combinations are formed: each daughter with her father, the fathers together, the daughters together and both daughters with their fathers. Father Borys Federov and Mikhail Zemtsov can be heard not only performing, but also as composers.

The album opens with the beautiful composition Amarcord, Childhood Memories by Borys Federov. A heartfelt composition, beautifully performed by daughters Anne and Dana. An impressionistic and Poulencian work with rich chromaticism, sudden twists, drawn out in a musical landscape of childhood memories. The subsequent Melodie im Alten Stil was composed by Yevgeni Zemtsov, Dana’s grandfather. A love melody that he wrote for his great love Liudmila, Dana’s grandmother. An almost silent, musing melody that is performed with deep empathy. The duet Viola Sonata by Nikolay Rosvalets is also beautiful, played with verve by father and daughter Zemtsov. The highlight is the traditional Shalom Aleichem. A fine Jewish song, played by father and daughter Zemtsov. A performance in which the two violin lines curl narratively around each other, complementing each other and lovingly embracing in a beautiful Yiddish timbre. We find something similar in Glazunov’s beautifully performed Elegy. A composer who fits in with the Russian music concept of The Mighty Five. A collective of five Russian composers (including Mussorgsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov) who incorporated Russian folklore into their compositions under the direction of Balakirev. The album closes with Mikhail Zemtsov’s Tango Suite. A work composed in the Tango Nuevo style. A way of composing, developed by Astor Piazzolla in the early 1950s. He gave the tango more depth and the style moved from the dance hall to the concert hall. The Tango Suite is a dazzling conclusion to a dynamic two-family album in which originality and excellent performances connect effortlessly.
