De Negarit Band is een gezelschap dat een innovatieve mix speelt van het Ethiopisch muzikaal erfgoed gehuld in een hedendaags pop- en jazz-metier.

De Negarit Band werd in 2012 opgericht door drummer en musicoloog Teferi Assefa met als doel om de Ethiopische muziek bekender te maken voor een groot publiek. Assefa deed onderzoek naar Ethiopische ritmes en melodieën die hij vervolgens verwerkt in zijn composities voor zijn album ORIGINS.

Ethiopische muziek is een van de meest herkenbare stijlen binnen de Afrikaanse muziek, waarin gebruik wordt gemaakt van een authentieke pentatonische toonladder. Deze tonaliteit vind je voortdurend terug in de thema’s, zowel gezongen, als in de solo’s op blaasinstrumenten, gitaar en keyboard als ook in de krar (de Ethiopische harp) en de massenqo, éénsnarig strijkinstrument. De muziek uit Ethiopië is zó oorspronkelijk dat het niet uitmaakt hoe het arrangement zich ontwikkelt, de muziek blíj́ft onmiskenbaar Ethiopisch door deze pentatoniek.

Dat maakt deze muziek ook zo bijzonder en dat horen we terug in de muziek van de Negarit Band. Drummer en bandleider Teferi Assefa is een master op de drums. Hij behaalde zijn diploma aan de Karol Szymanowski Muziekacademie in Katowice (Polen) en gaf (jazz)concerten in Europa en Amerika. Assefa was ook mede-oprichter van de Wudasse Ethio-jazzband. Een groep die binnen de Ethiopische geschiedenis als eerste een live-album uitbracht. Dit alles leverde hem veel ervaring op die hij nu gebruikt om zijn eigen Ethiopische composities op ORIGINS te presenteren aan een wereldwijd publiek. Composities met een schitterend Ethiopische lading, gemixt met pop en jazz waarin hij wordt bijgestaan door musici op keyboards, bas, saxofoon, trompet en gitaar en nog een zestal gastmusici.

Het resultaat is energieke muziek, avontuurlijke muziek. Strak drumwerk met veel gebruik van ritmische variaties en (plotselinge) wendingen, (meerstemmige) vocale stukken en fraaie blazersarrangementen, dynamische solo’s, hier en daar zelfs modaal. Dit alles gehuld in die prachtige, bijna mystieke Ethiopische achtergrond, wat van ORIGINS een zeer geslaagd album maakt, die zowel de Ethiopische- als de jazzliefhebber zal aanspreken.

The Negarit Band is a group that plays an innovative mix of Ethiopian musical heritage wrapped in a contemporary pop and jazz métier.

The Negarit Band was founded in 2012 by drummer and musicologist Teferi Assefa with the aim of making Ethiopian music better known to a larger audience. Assefa researched Ethiopian rhythms and melodies, which he then incorporated into his compositions for his album ORIGINS.

Ethiopian music is one of the most recognizable styles within African music, using an authentic type of pentatonic scale. This tonality is constantly reflected in the themes, both sung and in the solos on wind instruments, guitar and keyboard, as well as in the krar (the Ethiopian harp) and the massenqo, a one-string bowed instrument. The music from Ethiopia is so original that no matter how the arrangement develops, the music remains unmistakably Ethiopian because of this pentatonic.

That’s what makes the Ethiopian music so special and we also hear in the music of the Negarit Band. Drummer and bandleader Teferi Assefa is a master on the drums. He graduated from the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice (Poland) and gave (jazz) concerts in Europe and America. Assefa also co-founded the Wudasse Ethio Jazz band. A group that was the first in Ethiopian history to release a live album. All this gave him a lot of experience that he now uses to present his own Ethiopian compositions on ORIGINS to a worldwide audience. Compositions with a beautiful Ethiopian flavor, mixed with pop and jazz in which he is assisted by musicians on keyboards, bass, saxophone, trumpet and guitar and six guest musicians.

The result is energetic music, adventurous music. Tight drumming with extensive use of rhythmic variations and (sudden) twists, (polyphonic) vocal pieces and beautiful wind arrangements, dynamic solos, even modal here and there, wrapped in that beautiful, almost mystical Ethiopian background, which makes ORIGINS a very successful album that will appeal to both Ethiopian and jazz lovers.
