Bixiga 70 is een energieke band uit Sao Paolo. In een 2 vrouwen/8 mannen-bezetting van gitaar, contrabas, blazers: saxen, trompet en trombone; drums en toetsen laveert de groep op de rand van Afro-funk (Baile Flutuante en in het openingsstuk Malungu – met zelfs een Ethiopisch touché), Angolese gitaarklanken (in Marginal Elevado Radial), candomblé, Colombiaanse cumbia en Braziliaanse carimbó, zo nu en dan aangevuld met psychedelische synthesizer-sounds.

De groep mixt, matcht en goochelt met klanken en stijlen waardoor een nieuwe eigentijdse Bixiga70-stijl ontstaat. Wat daarbij vooral opvalt is de overweldigende energie die de muziek uitstraalt. Melodieuze composities zijn voorzien van weelderige arrangementen, overgoten met vitaliteit en levensvreugde. Wie een beetje vertrouwd is met deze stijlen, zal genieten van innovatieve, monumentale en zeer dansbare muziek. Wie minder bekend is met het Zuid-Amerikaanse en het West-Afrikaanse metier, zal verbaasd zijn over de afwisseling waarin wordt gestoeid met stevige percussie, ferme gitaarkleuren en homogene blazers-structuren en origineel toetsenwerk.

Bixiga 70 is a 10-piece band from Sao Paolo, Brazil, that plays an infectious melting pot of various styles.

In a 2 women/8 men line-up of guitar, double bass, wind instruments: saxes, trumpet and trombone, drums and keys, the group navigates on the edge of Afro-funk (Baile Flutuante and in the opening piece Malungu – even with an Ethiopian touch), Angolian guitar sounds (in Marginal Elevado Radial), candomblé, Colombian cumbia and Brazilian carimbó, occasionally supplemented with psychedelic synthesizer sounds.

The group mixes, matches and juggles with sounds and styles, creating a new contemporary Bixiga70 style. What is particularly striking is the overwhelming energy that the music radiates. Melodic compositions feature lush arrangements, suffused with vitality and joie de vivre. Those who are somewhat familiar with these styles will enjoy innovative, monumental and very danceable music. Those who are less familiar with the South American and West African metier, will be surprised by the variety in which they play with sturdy percussion, strong guitar colors and homogeneous wind structures and original keyboard work.
