Het trio The Marshals laat op hun nieuwe album Le P’tit Cham Session een bevlogen bluesrock-set horen.

The Marshals bestaan uit zanger, gitarist en liedjesschrijver Julien Robalo, drummer/percussionist Thomas Duchézeau en mondharmonica-speler Laurent Siguret. Hun derde album Le P’tit Cham Session werd eind april 2022 opgenomen in Mont Dore. Een gehucht, zo’n 50 km ten zuid-westen van Clermont-Ferrand, centraal Frankrijk.

Het trio heeft een bijzondere bezetting van gitaar, drums en mondharmonica die wonderwel goed uitpakt in een vette, ongepolijste versie van bluesrock. Er klinken stevige drums, fuzzy gitaargeluid, af en toe aangelengd met tremolo. Verder horen we de heerlijke bluesvocalen van Julien, ondersteund met schurende mondharmonica-rifs met, zo nu en dan, meerstemmige vocals, zoals in New Dawn. De band heeft een frisse, opgewekte en eerlijke uitstraling. Bijna alle stukken worden uitgevoerd in trio-bezetting (met af en toe een gitaar-dubbeling). In het nummer Steal the Silence begeleidt Julien Robalo zichzelf op elektrische gitaar en in het slotstuk See the Lightning is hij te horen op akoestische gitaar met mondharmonica. The Marshals is een originele en herkenbare band zoals je ze maar weinig tegenkomt. Een trio dat zich met veel plezier, soepel beweegt in een ruimtelijke bezetting.

The Marsals present an inspired blues rock set on their new album Le P’tit Cham Session.

The Marshals consist of singer, guitarist and songwriter Julien Robalo, drummer/percussionist Thomas Duchézeau and harmonica player Laurent Siguret. Their third album Le P’tit Cham Session was recorded in Mont Dore at the end of April 2022. A small town, about 50 km south-west of Clermont-Ferrand, central France.

The trio has a special line-up of guitar, drums and harmonica that works wonderfully well in a tight, unpolished version of blues rock. There are heavy drums, fuzzy guitar sound, occasionally diluted with tremolo. We also hear Julien’s wonderful blues vocals, supported by abrasive harmonica riffs with, now and then, polyphonic vocals, as in New Dawn. The band has a fresh, cheerful and honest appearance. Almost all pieces are performed in a trio (with occasional guitar doubling). In the song Steal the Silence Julien Robalo accompanies himself on electric guitar and in the final piece See the Lightning he can be heard on acoustic guitar with harmonica. The Marshals is an original and recognizable band that you rarely come across. With great pleasure this trio moves smoothly in a spatial line-up.
