Op het nieuwe album van The Ramsey Singers staan nieuwe, enerverende vocale composities uit het begin van de 21ste eeuw.

The Ramsey Singers is een Engels koor van zo’n 25 geschoolde zangers dat in 1987 werd opgericht. Onder leiding van Mark Fenton, zelf een begenadigd zanger, geven The Ramsey Singers concerten in kerken en kathedralen van Engeland en op concert-locaties in West Europa met werken van o.a. Henry Purcell en Percy Whitlock.

Op het nieuwe album Men & Angels staan composities van acht eigentijdse componisten, de jongste 25 en de oudste 66 jaar. Tegen een klassieke, religieuze achtergrond componeerden zij in het begin van de 21ste eeuw vocale, a capella stukken. De composities zijn homofoon gecomponeerd, wat betekent dat elke stem een (ongeveer) identiek ritme heeft, zoals bij een choral. Zo af en toe klinken er reciterende solo-passages zoals in Preces, Fauxbordon Magnificat of Responses. Voor- en nazang, geleend uit het Gregoriaans. Of begint een stuk met een solo-fragment zoals in Magnificat.

Tot zover, eigenlijk niets nieuws. Bijzonder echter, is het gebruik van innovatieve en totaal onverwachte akkoorden, samenklanken en gedurfde akkoord-progressies (akkoord-verbindingen) met dissonanten (zoals kleine secunde’s), die spannend door de melodie snijden. Dit alles zorgt voor muzikale spanning en opwinding en zodoende klinken er stukken die, met een link naar de Renaissance, een fris & nieuw metier laten horen. Dirigent Mark Fenton houdt daarbij nauwlettend de koorklank in de gaten en creëert met liefde en overgave de perfecte samenzang.

The new album from The Ramsey Singer features new, exciting vocal compositions from the early 21st century.

The Ramsey Singers is a English choir of about 25 trained singers that was founded in 1987. Under the direction of Mark Fenton, himself a gifted singer, The Ramsey Singers give concerts in churches and cathedrals of England and at concert venues in Western Europe with works by Henry Purcell and Percy Whitlock, among others.

This new album Men & Angels contains works composed by eight contemporary composers, the youngest 25 and the oldest 66 years old. At the beginning of the 21st century they composed vocal, a cappella pieces against a classical, religious background. The compositions are composed homophonically, which means that each voice has an (approximately) identical rhythm, like a choral. Every now and then there are reciting solo passages such as in Preces, Fauxbordon Magnificat or Responses. Call- and respond-vocals, borrowed from Gregorian chant, or starts a piece with a solo fragment, as in Magnificat.

So far, nothing new really. Special, however, is the use of innovative and totally unexpected chords, harmony and daring chord progressions (chord connections) with dissonances (such as minor seconds), which cut excitingly through the melody. All this creates musical tension and excitement, resulting in pieces that, with a link to the Renaissance, show a fresh & new metier. Conductor Mark Fenton keeps a close eye on the choral sound and creates the perfect harmony vocals with love and dedication.
