De film With Peter Bradley gaat over de Amerikaanse schilder Peter Bradley (1940). Hij maakt werk dat aansluit bij de Color Field schilderkunst. Een abstracte en expressionistische schilderkunst waar wordt gewerkt met relatief grote kleurvlakken of kleurvelden. Dat gebeurt op intuïtie maar wordt ook gemanipuleerd door de vlakken aan te passen en bij te kleuren. In de film With Peter Bradley wordt het werkproces gevolgd van de kunstenaar.

Er daar hoort natuurlijk muziek bij. Aangezien Peter Bradley van jazz houdt en dan vooral van: “Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Jimmy Cobb” zo zegt hijzelf in de trailer van de film, lag de keuze voor de muziek van Javon Jackson voor de hand. Een breed georiënteerd musicus die als 22-jarige muzikant lid werd van The Jazz Messengers van drummer Art Blakey. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot een bevlogen be-bop saxofonist en speelde mee op meer dan 150 albums.

Ook op dit album horen we het transparante en elastische spel van de bevlogen tenorsaxofonist Javon Jackson. Een musicus die weloverwogen zijn noten kiest en nauwgezet zijn muzikaal verhaal vertelt. Prachtig is de compositie Edith Ramsey waar fraai gebruik gemaakt wordt van de hele-toonstoonladder. Een toonladder zonder begin en eind, waardoor de muziek mystiek en ongrijpbaar wordt. Jackson wordt bijgestaan door zijn vaste begeleiders pianist Jeremy Manasia, bassist David Williams en drummer McClenty Hunter. Deze laatste wordt in enkele stukken vervangen door de jonge New Yorkse drummer Charles Goold.

Het werk op With Peter Bradley sluit perfect aan bij het be-bop idioom en wordt voortreffelijk uitgevoerd, met heerlijk trompetspel van Greg Glassman (mooi in het korte On the Move) en gedreven klavierwerk in Easy Peasy. Niet alle stukken op dit album worden gebruikt in de film, waaronder het door Dizzy Gillespie’s That’s Earl Brother (een ode aan saxofonist Earl Bostic die het voorbeeld was van John Coltrane).

Het album With Peter Bradley is een gedreven soundtrack met nieuw gecomponeerd werk van Javon Jackson. Een voortreffelijk saxofonist & componist die wordt bijgestaan door vakkundige musici. Zij creëren een jazz-timbre dat naadloos aansluit bij het kleurrijke schilderwerk van Peter Bradley uit de documentaire. Een lust voor oog en oor.

Saxophonist Javon Jackson composed the music for Alex Rappoport’s movie With Peter Bradley.

The documentairy With Peter Bradley is about the American painter Peter Bradley (1940). He creates work that is in line with the Color Field painting. An abstract and expressionist painting that works with relatively large areas of color or color fields. This happens on intuition, but is also manipulated by adjusting and coloring the surfaces. In the film With Peter Bradley, the work process of the artist is followed.

Of course there is music involved. Since Peter Bradley loves jazz and especially: “Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Jimmy Cobb” as he says in the trailer of the film, the choice for the music of Javon Jackson was obvious. A broadly oriented musician who, as a 22-year-old saxophone player, became a member of drummer Art Blakey’s The Jazz Messengers. He developed into a passionate be-bop saxophonist and played on more than 150 albums.

Also on this album we hear the transparent and elastic playing of the passionate tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson. A musician who deliberately chooses his notes and meticulously tells his musical story. The composition Edith Ramsey is beautiful, with the wonderful use of the whole-tone scale. A scale without beginning and end that makes the music mystical and elusive. Jackson is assisted by his regular accompanists pianist Jeremy Manasia, bassist David Williams and drummer McClenty Hunter. The latter is replaced in some pieces by the young New York drummer Charles Goold.

The work on With Peter Bradley fits in perfectly with the be-bop idiom and is superbly executed, with wonderful trumpet playing by Greg Glassman (beautiful in the short piece On the Move) and passionate piano work in Easy Peasy. Not all of the pieces on this album are used in the film, including Dizzy Gillespie’s That’s Earl Brother (an ode to saxophonist Earl Bostic who modeled John Coltrane).

The album With Peter Bradley is a passionate soundtrack with newly composed work by Javon Jackson. An excellent saxophonist & composer who is assisted by skilled musicians. They create a jazz timbre that seamlessly matches Peter Bradley’s colorful painting from the documentary. Lovely for eyes and ears.
