Op Music for Shepherds and Sultans klinken instrumentale composities die worden gespeeld op viool, ûd (Arabische luit) en percussie. Het zeer prille idee voor dit album ontstond toen de Cypriotische violist Michalis Kouloumis samenspeelde met de Vlaamse ûd-speler Tristan Driessens in mei 2013 op het eiland San Giorgio Maggiore in Venetië.

Nu, 10 jaar later, is de CD Music for Shepherds and Sultans een feit waarop ook de Catalaanse multi-instrumentaliste Miriam Encinas te horen is, die naast bendir en daff (beide frame drums) en riq (tamboerijn) ook fluit speelt. Een album met voor de helft traditionele stukken en voor de helft nieuw gecomponeerd werk van Michalis Kouloumis, Tristan Driessens, Tanrikoku en Cemil Bey. De composities op Music for Shepherds and Sultans zijn gebaseerd op toonladders. Een andere compositiewijze zoals wij die in het westen kennen, waar men uitgaat van akkoorden en harmonieën. De werken op Music for Shepherds and Sultans zijn modaal, gebaseerd dus op toonladders die de kern vormen voor de muziek. Energieke muziek, vol unisono gespeelde passages, thema’s in onregelmatige maatsoorten, afgewisseld met dynamische solo’s. Dit alles ritmisch strak ondersteund door ferm percussiewerk.

Deze wijze van spelen vergt ruime improvisatie-technieken van deze drie musici. Zij moeten de thema’s uitstekend beheersen, goed naar elkaar luisteren, anticiperen en de virtuositeit bezitten om te kunnen stralen in de solistische passages. En dat is precies wat deze musici doen. Op bevlogen en natuurlijke wijze schijnen & schitteren de composities alsof deze er altijd al waren, zoals traditionals: muziek voor herders en sultans, muziek dus voor iedereen, voor Elckerlijc!

Violinist Michalis Kouloumis, Tristan Driessens & Miriam Encinas present an exciting mix of Greek, Ottoman and folk music on their album Music for Shepherds and Sultans.

Music for Shepherds and Sultans features instrumental compositions played on violin, ûd (Arabic lute) and percussion. The very early idea for this album arose when the Cypriot violinist Michalis Kouloumis played together with the Flemish ûd player Tristan Driessens on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice in May 2013.

Now, 10 years later, the CD Music for Shepherds and Sultans is released. A CD on which you can also hear the Catalan multi-instrumentalist Miriam Encinas, who also plays the flute in addition to bendir and daff (both frame drums) and riq (tambourine). On Music for Shepherds and Sultans there are traditional pieces and newly composed work by Michalis Kouloumis, Tristan Driessens, Tanrikoku and Cemil Bey. The compositions are based on scales. Another way of composing as we know it in the west, where the music compositions are based on chords and harmonies. The works on Music for Shepherds and Sultans are modal, so based on scales that form the core of the music. Energetic music, full of passages played in unison, themes in irregular time signatures, interspersed with dynamic solos. All this rhythmically tight supported by firm percussion work.

This way of playing requires skilled improvisation techniques from these three musicians. They must have an excellent command of the themes, listen carefully to each other, anticipate and have virtuosity in order to shine in the solo passages. And that is exactly what these musicians do. In an inspired and natural way the compositions shine, as if they always excited, like traditionals: Music for Shepherds and Sultans, music for everyone, for Elckerlijc!
