De Schotse violiste Sarah-Jane Summers woont tegenwoordig in Noorwegen. Zij nam samen met gitarist/ partner Juhani Silvola en een 11-delig strijkorkest het album Sølvstrøk op. Al jaren zijn Summers en Silvola te vinden op diverse podia en al jaren droomt Summers ervan om haar eigen muziek te componeren en arrangeren voor een kamerorkest dat voornamelijk bestaat uit folkmusici. Een droom die nu is uitgekomen en te vinden op de CD Sølvstrø.

Het resultaat is een folk-album van grote klasse. Tegen een klassieke achtergrond zijn de stukken gecomponeerd, waarbij dynamiek, speelwijzen en structuren nauwgezet zijn uitgewerkt. Zo is Tune for Alister een ode aan de pasgeborene, pas 18 maanden oud. Een mars voor het jonge leven: vrolijk, melodisch en vol energie gevolgd door sluimerende en trage melodie die een metafoor is voor het verdere leven. Morning Prayer zit vol schitterende polyfonie, vanwaaruit een serene melodie ontstaat, die uitmondt in bijna sacraal samenspel. Owerset I en II zijn dansen die door de uitvoering met een volledig orkest extra krachtig overkomen en waarbij je in je voetzolen de zindering van de dansvloer voelt vibreren. Het stuk Miss Mary MacDonald opent met een knipoog naar Mozarts 25ste Symphonie, waarmee dit stuk opent & sluit, weliswaar in een sneller tempo dan het origineel. Erg fraai is ook Call & Response als de soloviool wordt ondersteund door bourdon-strijkers, gevolgd door unisono samenspel.

De muziek op Sølvstrøk klinkt verzorgd, is coherent, waarbij het samenspel voortdurend kalm en vredig overkomt, hoe sterk de dynamische verschillen per compositie of frase soms ook zijn. De stukken zijn zeer melodisch, veelal gecomponeerd vanuit de vocale traditie waardoor de thema’s welluidend zijn, bijna liederen-zonder-woorden. De arrangementen en de briljante uitvoeringen zorgen uiteindelijk voor onvergetelijke muziek!

Sarah-Jane Summers & Juhani Silvola play transparent chamber music folk in a larger line-up on the album Sølvstrøk.

The Scottish violinist Sarah-Jane Summers currently lives in Norway. She recorded the album Sølvstrøk together with guitarist/partner Juhani Silvola and an 11-piece string orchestra. For years Summers and Silvola can be found on various stages and for years Summers has dreamed of composing and arranging her own music for a chamber orchestra consisting mainly of folk musicians. A dream that has now come true and can be found on the CD Sølvstrø.

The result is a folk album of great class. The pieces have been composed with a classical background, in which dynamics, way of playing and structures have been carefully worked out. Tune for Alister, for example, is an ode to the newborn, only 18 months old. A march for young life: cheerful, melodic and full of energy followed by a slumbering and slow melody that is a metaphor for the afterlife. Morning Prayer is full of beautiful polyphony, from which a serene melody emerges, which culminates in almost sacred interplay. Owerset I and II are dances that come across as extra powerful due to the performance with a full orchestra and in which you feel the sizzling vibration of the dance floor in your feet. The piece Miss Mary MacDonald opens with a nod to Mozart’s 25th Symphony, with which this piece opens & closes, aa little faster than the original. Call & Response is also very beautiful when the solo violin is supported by bourdon strings, followed by unison ensemble playing.

The music on Sølvstrøk sounds tight, is coherent, with the interplay constantly coming across as calm and peaceful, no matter how strong the dynamic differences per composition or phrase may be. The pieces are very melodic, often composed from the vocal tradition, so that the themes are euphonious, almost songs-without-words. The arrangements and the brilliant performances makes this unforgettable music!
