Het Poolse strijkkwintet Vołosi trekt je met 200 Weeks Ago mee in eindeloos breed metier van diep gewortelde strijkers.

Het Poolse strijkkwintet Vołosi bestaat uit 2 violisten, een cellist en een contrabassist. De composities op hun nieuwe album 200 Weeks Ago bestaan uit korte melodische fragmenten. Soms niet meer dan acht maten met gebruik van voor de hand liggende harmonieën en thema’s, die in de doorwerking worden voorzien van variaties. Een soortgelijke compositorische techniek komen we ook tegen in de werken van Michael Nyman, zeker bij de soundtrack van Drowning by Numbers. Deze werkwijze maakt de muziek overzichtelijk en helder. Maar wat Vołosi zo sterk en origineel maakt is de uitvoering. Deze is strak, ritmisch, bijzonder dynamisch en virtuoos. Zeker in de variaties gaan de mannen echt los. Soms heel onverwacht, dan weer rustig opbouwend, waar de Poolse (volks)signatuur om de hoek komt kijken met hier en daar zelfs een enkel Roma- of jazzfragment.

Op 200 Weeks Ago staan elf stukken die allemaal zijn gecomponeerd door cellist Stanislaw Lasoń, op twee stukken na, die van alt-violist Jan Kaczmarzyk zijn. Het viool- en cello- en contrabasspel wordt volledig benut, waarbij alle speeltechnieken worden gebruikt, zoals strijken (con arco), pizzicato (tokkelen) en het spelen van flageolettonen: hierbij klinkt de eerste boventoon. Door de vinger zacht op de snaar te leggen klinkt de toon ijl en een octaaf hoger. De uitvoeringen klinken ongelooflijk coherent, beheerst en zelfverzekerd. 200 Weeks Ago is een briljant album van vakkundige musici, die het strijkkwintet zeer toegankelijk heeft gemaakt voor een breed publiek.

On the album 200 Weeks Ago, the Polish string quintet Vołosi takes you along in an endlessly broad craft of deeply rooted strings.

The Polish string quintet Vołosi consists of 2 violinists, a cellist and a double bassist. The compositions on their new album 200 Weeks Ago consist of short melodic fragments. Sometimes no more than eight measures using obvious harmonies and themes, which are provided with lovely variations further on in the composition. We also encounter a similar compositional technique in the works of Michael Nyman, especially on the soundtrack of Drowning by Numbers. This method makes the music clear and transparent. But what makes Vołosi so exciting and original is the performance: tight, rhythmic, very dynamic and virtuoso. Especially in the variations, these men can go really wild. Sometimes very unexpected, but also calmly constructive, where the Polish (folk) signature comes alongside, with even a single Roma or jazz fragment here and there.

200 Weeks Ago contains eleven pieces, all composed by cellist Stanislaw Lasoń, except for two pieces by violist Jan Kaczmarzyk. The violin, cello and double bass playing is fully utilized, with all playing techniques being used, such as bowing (con arco), pizzicato (plucking) and playing flageolet tones: here the first overtone sounds. By placing the finger gently on the string, the tone sounds thin and an octave higher. The performances sound incredibly coherent, composed and confident. 200 Weeks Ago is a brilliant album by skilled musicians, who have made the string quintet music very accessible to a wide audience.
