Wicked Light is het tweede album van Nederlandse folkband Legiana Collective waarmee de groep een rotsvaste plek heeft veroverd binnen de folk-energie.

Legiana Collective is een negenkoppige folkband pur sang. Geïnspireerd op de eeuwenoude trouvères en troubadours-traditie schreef en arrangeerde de groep op eigenzinnige en originele wijze liedjes die aansluiten bij de orale traditie. In een bevlogen set-up van snaarinstrumenten als (bas)gitaar, viool, mandoline, accordeon en slagwerk is het toch vooral de zang die de aandacht trekt. Prachtige meerstemmige vocalen die zo af en toe doen denken aan de Galicische zang uit Noord-Spanje. Daarnaast wordt er gespeeld met ritme-wisselingen, stevig gesoleerd en klinken de arrangementen niet alleen gepassioneerd, maar wordt er ook voortdurend gewisseld in bezettingen waardoor elk lied een eigen timbre krijgt. Teksten worden gezongen in het Nederlands, Spaans, Georgisch, Engels en Frans. Enkele stukken zijn traditionals zoals Hemels Dauwe, van oorsprong een Kerstlied uit de 15de eeuw. Of het lied La Petenera met een flamenco georiënteerd ritme dat Legiana Collective ‘leende’ van de Boliviaanse groep Inti-Illimani, net zoals Shenma Survilma, dat een strelend traditioneel lied uit Georgië is.

Het Legiana Collective slaat een deuk in het folklandschap. Op hun album Wicked Light speelt de groep weliswaar diverse stijlen muziek maar abstraheert deze op innovatieve wijze naar hun eigen folk-metier. Het collectief bewijst hiermee dat de folk-revival uit de jaren ’60 zich kan verheugen op een vlammende voortzetting die met verve en enthousiasme wordt gebracht.

Wicked Light is the second album by Dutch folk band Legiana Collective with which the group has conquered a rock-solid place within the folk energy.

Legiana Collective is a nine-piece folk band pur sang. Inspired by the age-old trouvères and troubadours tradition, the group wrote and arranged songs in an idiosyncratic and original way that are in line with the oral tradition. In an inspired set-up of string instruments such as (bass) guitar, violin, mandolin, accordion and percussion, it is mainly the vocals that attract the attention. Beautiful polyphonic voices that occasionally remind of the Galician vocals of northern Spain. In addition, there are rhythm changes, solid solo’s and the arrangements not only sound passionate, but line-ups are also constantly changed, giving each song its own timbre. Lyrics are sung in Dutch, Spanish, Georgian, English and French. Some pieces are traditionals such as Hemels Dauwe, originally a Christmas carol from the 15th century. Or the song La Petenera with a flamenco oriented rhythm that Legiana Collective ‘borrowed’ from the Bolivian group Inti-Illimani, just like Shenma Survilma, which is a fine traditional song from Georgia.

The Legiana Collective makes folk music sounds fresh again. Although the group plays various styles of music on their album Wicked Light, they abstract it in an innovative way to their own folk metier. With this, the collective proves that the folk revival from the 1960s can look forward to a flaming continuation that is performed with verve and enthusiasm.
