De Amerikaanse saxofonist Javon Jackson speelt een enerverende set Gospel & Spiritual-klassiekers.

Javon Jackson wordt geboren in Missouri en wil aanvankelijk drummer worden. Maar de drum was een te luid instrument in huize Jackson en daarom besloot Javon saxofoon te gaan spelen. Hij studeerde kort aan de Universiteit van Denver en het Berklee College of Music voordat hij zich aansloot bij de band van Art Blakey in 1987. Hij speelde mee op meer dan 150 albums van o.a. Freddy Hubbard, Cedar Walton en Ron Carter. Naast het spelen van be-bop nam hij albums op met soul en funk met organist Dr. Lonny Smith, trombonist Fred Wesley en drummer Lenny White.

Het album The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni is opgedragen aan de bekende Afro-Amerikaanse dichteres Nikki Giovanni. De saxofonist Jason Jackson, die onder de indruk is van het werk van Giovanni, vroeg haar een collectie te maken van haar favoriete gospels. Deze nam hij op met zijn gebruikelijke trio van pianist Jeremy Manasia, bassist David Williams en drummer McClenty Hunter. Het resultaat is een fraai exposé van overbekende gospel en spirituals waaronder Mary had a Baby, Swing Low en het schitterende Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child.

Het innige spel van Javon Jackson heeft een verhalend karakter met een hoog spontaan gehalte. Hij speelt de thema’s nauwgezet, precies zoals de melodie bedoeld is, zonder omspelingen en versieringen, waarna er wordt gesoleerd. De begeleidingen daarentegen zijn niet alleen in de gospel-stijl en calypso in Swing Low, maar bewegen zich ook over een be-bop-landschap met walking bas (lopende bas), uitgebreide akkoorden, hier en daar modaal en levendige dynamiek. In een warme klankkleur kleurt Jackson de improvisaties en beweegt zijn spel zich soepel door de harmonieën, steeds met een link naar de melodie. Dat geldt overigens ook voor pianist Jeremy Manasia die prachtig complementair begeleidt, met aanvullende partijen (geweldig in Lord, I want to be a Christian) en stuwende solo’s geeft.

Naast dat dichteres Nikki Giovanni dit energieke album samenstelde, horen we haar gedicht “A Very Simple Wish” in Wade In the Water (gedeclameerd door Christina Greer) en klinkt haar aandoenlijke stem in een sobere uitvoering Night Song. Een prachtig lied over een naar-zijn-identiteit-zoekende mens.

American saxophonist Javon Jackson plays an exciting set of Gospel and Spiritual classics.

Javon Jackson was born in Missouri and initially wanted to become a drummer. But the drum was too loud to play in the Jackson’s house and so Javon decided to play the saxophone. He briefly attended the University of Denver and Berklee College of Music before joining Art Blakey’s band in 1987. He has played on more than 150 albums with musicians like Freddy Hubbard, Cedar Walton and Ron Carter. In addition to playing be-bop, he recorded soul and funk albums with organist Dr. Lonny Smith, trombonist Fred Wesley and drummer Lenny White.

The album The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni is dedicated to the famous Afro-American poet Nikki Giovanni. Impressed by Giovanni’s work, saxophonist Javon Jackson asked her to make a collection of her favorite gospels. He recorded these with his usual trio of pianist Jeremy Manasia, bassist David Williams and drummer McClenty Hunter. The result is a beautiful collection of well-known gospel and spirituals, including Mary had a Baby, Swing Low and the beautiful Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child.

Javon Jackson’s intimate playing has a narrative character with a high spontaneous content. He plays the themes accurately, exactly as the melody is intended, without diversions and embellishments. The accompaniments, on the other hand, are not only in the gospel style and calypso in Swing Low, but also move over a be-bop landscape with walking bass, extended chords, here and there modal and lively dynamics. Jackson colors the improvisations in a warm timbre and his playing moves smoothly through the harmonies, always with a link to the melody. That also applies to pianist Jeremy Manasia, who accompanies beautifully complementary, with additional parts (wonderful in Lord, I want to be a Christian) and he plays powerful solos.

In addition to the poet Nikki Giovanni who put together this energetic album, we hear her poem “A Very Simple Wish” in Wade In the Water (declaimed by Christina Greer) and her touching voice in a sober performance of Night Song. A beautiful song about man searching for his identity.
