Celliste Ella van Poucke en pianist Caspar Vos geven de muziek van Sergei Rachmaninov een enorme diepgang

Dit jaar, 2023, is het 150 jaar geleden dat de Russische componist Sergei Rachmaninov werd geboren. Hij componeerde in de Laat Russische Romantische stijl. Een melodische stijl uit de 19de en 20ste eeuw waar (nationale) thematiek en dynamiek belangrijke onderdelen zijn. Andere componisten die deze stijl vertegenwoordigen zijn o.a. Balakirev (de oprichter van het Machtige Hoopje, waar Moessorgsky, Borodin en Rimski-Korsakov ook toe behoorden) en Sergej Tanejev, bij wie Rachmaninov afstudeerde aan het Conservatorium in Moskou in 1892. Terwijl zijn tijdgenoten Skrjabin, Sjostakovitsj en Stravinsky kozen voor de moderniteit, behoorde Rachmaninov tot een van de laatste vertegenwoordigers van Laat Russische Romantische muziek.

De composities van Rachmaninov zijn groots, meeslepend, bloemrijk en majestueus. De kern van zijn muziek is de melodie, het thema, dat soms klein en intiem is, dan weer kolossaal en zelfs orkestraal. Dat geldt ook voor de Sonate voor Cello Op. 19, Twee stukken voor Cello & Piano en Trio Élegiaque No. 1 (met violist Niek Baar). Deze werken worden gespeeld door celliste Ella van Poucke en pianist Caspar Vos. Het duo heeft een onlosmakelijke cohesie ontwikkeld waarbij cello en piano soepel en plooibaar naar elkaar toe bewegen, elkaar muzikaal de ruimte geven en zo komen tot een prachtige uitgebalanceerde uitvoering.

Celliste Poucke beweegt zich in een doortastend metier waarbij passie, durf en trefzekerheid de kernwoorden zijn. Met grote zorgvuldigheid laat zij haar instrument ronken, huilen, wenen en dartelen in een weelderig timbre. Pianist Vos heeft een verfijnd touché waarmee hij met souplesse en bezieling de indrukwekkende pianopartijen ten gehore brengt. Opvallend daarbij is zijn zeer zorgvuldig gebruik van ritenuto, die de muziek laat ademen en je meevoert in de soms grillige structuren van de composities. Het slotwerk, Tristissima is van de Oekraïns/Nederlandse componist Maxim Shalygin (1985) dat hij speciaal componeerde voor Ella van Poucke en Caspar Vos. Een werk met een hoog koraal-gehalte, brede akkoorden, indrukwekkende arpeggio’s en subtiele (flageolet)cello-tonen. Van Poucke en Vos zijn aan elkaar gewaagd en vormen een indrukwekkend duo dat met grote expressie en verfijnd inlevingsvermogen de werken van Rachmaninov een nieuw leven geeft.

The duo of cellist Ella van Poucke and pianist Caspar Vos give Sergei Rachmaninov’s music an enormous depth

This year, 2023, marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov. He composed in the Late Russian Romantic style. A melodic style from the 19th and 20th century in which (national) themes and dynamics are important components. Other composers who represent this style include Balakirev (the founder of the Het Machtige Hoopje (The Mighty Five), which also included Mussorgsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov) and Sergey Tanejev, with whom Rachmaninov graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1892. While his contemporaries Scriabin, Shostakovich and Stravinsky opted for modernity, Rachmaninov was one of the last representatives of Late Russian Romantic music.

Rachmaninov’s compositions are grand, compelling and majestic. The core of his music is the melody, the theme, which is sometimes small and intimate, at other times colossal and even orchestral. This also applies to the Sonata for Cello Op. 19, Two pieces for Cello & Piano and Trio Élegiaque No. 1 (with violinist Niek Baar). These works are played by cellist Ella van Poucke and pianist Caspar Vos. The duo has developed an inseparable cohesion in which cello and piano move smoothly and pliable towards each other, giving each other musical space and thus achieving a wonderful balanced performance.

Cellist Poucke moves in a vigorous profession in which passion, daring and accuracy are the key words. With care she lets her instrument roar, howl, weep and frolic in a sumptuous timbre. Pianist Vos has a refined touch with which he performs the impressive piano parts with flexibility and inspiration. Striking is his very careful use of ritenuto, which lets the music breathe and takes you into the sometimes whimsical structures of the compositions. The final work, Tristissima, is composed by the Ukrainian/Dutch composer Maxim Shalygin (1985), which he wrote especially for Ella van Poucke and Caspar Vos. A work with a high chorale content, broad chords, impressive arpeggios and subtle (flageolet) cello tones. Van Poucke and Vos are evenly matched and form an impressive duo that gives the compositions of Rachmaninov a new lease of life with great expression and refined empathy.
