De Nederlandse trompettist Eric Vloeimans componeerde en speelde de soundtrack voor de documentaire Wild Port of Europa.

Wild Port of Europe is een documentaire van Willem Berents en Melanie Kutzke over het dierenleven in de havens van Rotterdam en Moerdijk (released in oktober ’22). Een dierenleven dat wordt uitvergroot op plekken waar je normaal gesproken langsrijdt, vaart, fietst of loopt. Trompettist Eric Vloeimans werd benaderd om muziek te schrijven en uit te voeren voor deze film. Een goede keuze, aangezien Vloeimans zich al eerder bewezen heeft met het schrijven van succesvolle, filmische muziek, zoals dat te horen is op zijn album Oliver’s Cinema, die hij opnam met accordeonist Tuur Florizoone en cellist Jörg Brinkman.

Deze laatste is ook te horen op het album Wild Port of Europe samen met drummer/ percussionist Dirk-Peter Kölsch. Het resultaat is 39 korte composities, sommige niet langer dan een minuut, die de fantasie prikkelen en waarin het dieren-havenleven zich als een levendig, avontuurlijk schouwspel aan je voorbijtrekt, ook al heb je de film nog niet bekeken. Frisse, herkenbare melodieën, thema’s, liederen zonder woorden die meteen tot de verbeelding spreken. In de begeleiding horen we gestreken en getokkeld cellospel, subtiel maar ook ferm (Wat Zien ik) drums- en percussiespel aangevuld met effecten. De arrangementen zijn transparant en hebben hierdoor een helder metier. Bijzonder zijn het ‘vertellende’ De Haven; Proloog, een wals die door de percussie licht polyritmisch wordt of het Zuid-Afrikaans aandoende Hop (lange en korte versie) in een heerlijk eeuwig-durende-melodie, naast het spannende, soms huilende Bever, gevolgd door het korte maar, oh zo luchtige Rugstreeppad op Vrijersvoeten. En zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan, maar overtuig jezelf en beoordeel de Wild Port of Europe met open oog en oor!

Dutch trumpet player Eric Vloeimans composed and performed the soundtrack for the documentary Wild Port of Europe.

Wild Port of Europe is a documentary by Willem Berents and Melanie Kutzke about the animal life in the ports of Rotterdam and Moerdijk (released in October 22). An animal life that is magnified in places where you normally drive, sail, cycle or walk by. Trumpeter Eric Vloeimans was approached to write and perform music for this film. A good choice, since Vloeimans has already proven himself writing successful, cinematic music, as can be heard on his album Oliver’s Cinema, which he recorded together with accordionist Tuur Florizoone and cellist Jörg Brinkman.

The latter can also be heard on the album Wild Port of Europe together with drummer / percussionist Dirk-Peter Kölsch. The result is 39 short compositions, some no longer than a minute, that stimulate the imagination and in which the animal harbor life passes you by like an adventurous spectacle, even if you have not yet watched the film. Fresh, recognizable melodies, themes, songs without words that immediately appeal to the imagination. In the accompaniment we hear bowed and plucked cello playing, subtle but also firm (What do I see) drums and percussion playing supplemented with effects. The arrangements are transparent and therefore have a clear metier. Special are the ‘narrative’ De Haven; Prologue, a waltz that becomes slightly polyrhythmic due to the percussion or the South African-sounding Hop (long and short version) in a wonderfully eternal melody, next to the exciting, sometimes crying Bever, followed by the short but oh so airy Rugstreeppad op Vrijersvoeten. And I could go on and on, but convince yourself and judge the Wild Port of Europe with an open mind for eye and ear!
