De Iraanse zangeres Marjan Vahdat laat op haar nieuwe album Our Garden is Alone een nieuw Iran horen.

Marjan Vahdat werd in 1976 geboren in Teheran, de hoofdstad van Iran. Ze studeerde zang in haar geboorteland en Keulen. Tegenwoordig woont ze in Sacramento (California), aangezien het onmogelijk is om in Iran een leven als muzikante op te bouwen. Haar muzikale carrière begint als zij 19 is, samen met haar zus Masha met wie ze enkele CD’s opneemt, waaronder het album Lullabies from the axis of evil (2004). Our Garden is Alone is haar derde solo-cd en heeft een diepe intensiteit, warmte en emotie. Zeker als je bedenkt dat Vahdat leeft in ballingschap en de CD werd opgenomen in corona-tijd. De musici namen elk hun partijen thuis op en deze werden later gemixt door pianist en producer Bugge Wesseltoft (foto). De muziek op Our Garden is Alone start bij Marjan Vahdat. In haar home-studio neemt zij haar nieuw gecomponeerde liederen op en stuurt deze naar Wesseltoft. Deze worden, naast Wesseltoft, ook begeleid door bassist Jo Berger Myhre drummer/percussionist Kenneth Ekornes, kamenche-speler Shervin Mohajer en Pasha Hanjani op de neyfluit. Het resultaat is adembenemend. Muziek gecomponeerd vanuit rust en aandacht. Ook voor diegene die niet (zo) bekend is met de Iraanse signatuur, is dit nieuwe album zeer toegankelijk. Zo heeft Sunrise een strelende melodie die wordt besprenkeld met piano-klanken en percussie en is Love Resonates een liefdes-ode, geschreven op een gedicht van de Sufi-dichter Rumi (13de eeuw). Ook het slotstuk In Love heeft een zelfde aangename melodie die subtiel wordt ondersteund met ney, piano en percussie. Our Garden is Alone is een soort ode aan de afzondering, aan de stilte. Excellent hoe Marjan deze verpakt in haar composities, zichzelf blijft en haar achtergrond niet verloochend. Sterker nog, hoe ze haar Iraanse afkomst in schemer verpakt met gelardeerde tonaliteit in haar vocalen, heel subtiel en steeds latent aanwezig.

Iranian singer Marjan Vahdat shows a new Iran on her new album Our Garden is Alone.

Marjan Vahdat was born in 1976 in Tehran, the capital of Iran. She studied singing in her native country and Cologne. Today she lives in Sacramento (California), as it is impossible to build a life as a musician in Iran. Her musical career started when she was 19, together with her sister Masha with whom she recorded several CDs, including the album Lullabies from the axis of evil (2004). Our Garden is Alone is her third solo CD and has a deep intensity, warmth and emotion. Especially when you consider that Vahdat lives in exile and the CD was recorded in corona time. Each musician recorded their parts at home and these were later on mixed by pianist and producer Bugge Wesseltoft (photo). The music on Our Garden is Alone starts with Marjan Vahdat. She recorded her newly composed songs in her home studio and sends them to Wesseltoft. In addition to Wesseltoft, these are also accompanied by bassist Jo Berger Myhre, percussionist Kenneth Ekornes, kamenche player Shervin Mohajer and Pasha Hanjani on the ney flute. The result is breathtaking. Music composed from peace and attention. This new album is also very accessible for those who are not (so) familiar with the Iranian musical signature. The song Sunrise has a caressing melody sprinkled with piano sounds and percussion and Love Resonates is an ode to love, written on a poem by the Sufi poet Rumi (13th century). The closing piece In Love also has the same pleasant melody that is subtly supported by ney, piano and percussion. Our Garden is Alone is a kind of ode to seclusion, to silence. Excellent how Marjan packs these into her compositions, staying true to herself, without denying her background. In fact, how she wraps her Iranian heritage in twilight with larded tonality in her vocals, very subtle. Excellent music!
