Het nieuwe album Talm ur galon van de Bretonse groep Startijenn steekt weer met kop en schouders uit boven het folk-maaiveld.

Zo’n 20 jaar geleden besloten zes middelbare schoolvrienden de band Startijenn op te richten en muziek te spelen uit Bretagne. Dat doen ze tot op heden. Naast rock, pop en zelfs Marokkaanse invloeden op hun album El-TaQA-project uit 2013, blijft de basis de folk uit Bretagne. Musici als harpist en zanger Alan Stivell en gitarist Dan Ar Bras, violist Jacky Molard of zanger Eric Marchand (folk met Roemeense blazers) spelen al jaren met succes folk-crossovers. Iets soortgelijks komen we tegen bij het sextet Startijenn. In hun muziek ligt de thematische zwaartekracht in de diatonische accordeon en de rietinstrumenten binou & bombarde (soort hobo) en uilleann-pipes (doedelzak). Deze instrumenten vormen de ziel van hun energieke muziek. Opzwepende ritmes worden gegoten in innovatieve arrangementen met lyrische thema’s (schitterende waltz Typhaine), fraaie dynamiek, compacte rap (Skilfou An Noz) en zelfs fuzz-sounds in de accordeon (solo in Lady L). Wat vooral opvalt is de vitaliteit en het — gemak waarmee Startijenn hun muziek speelt. Inspirerend folk, overgoten met lef en tijdloos doorzettingsvermogen!

The new album Talm ur galon by the Breton group Startijenn once again stands head and shoulders above the folk level.

About 20 years ago, six high school friends decided to form the band Startijenn and play music from Brittany. Then they do to date. In addition to rock, pop and even Moroccan influences on their album El-TaQA project from 2013, the basis remains the folk from Brittany. Musicians such as harpist and singer Alan Stivell and guitarist Dan Ar Bras, violinist Jacky Molard or singer Eric Marchand  (folk with Romanian wind instruments) have been playing folk crossovers successfully for years. We encounter something similar in the sextet Startijenn. In their music, the thematic gravity lies in the diatonic accordion and the reed instruments binou & bombarde (a kind of oboe) and uilleann-pipes (bagpipes). These instruments are the soul of their energetic music. Exciting rhythms are cast in innovative arrangements with lyrical themes (gorgeous waltz Typhaine), beautiful dynamics, compact rap (Skilfou An Noz) and even fuzz sounds in the accordion (solo in Lady L). What is particularly striking is the vitality and — ease with which Startijenn plays their music. Inspiring folk, suffused with guts and timeless perseverance!
