El Khat is de band van muzikant Eyal el Wahab waarmee hij een ongeëvenaarde mix speelt van Jemenitische pop & traditionele muziek.

El Khat werd opgericht door Eyal el Wahab. Hij groeide op in Tel Aviv in de Jemenitische diaspora. Aan het einde van de 40-er jaren werden de Jemenitische joden gedwongen Jemen te verlaten. Ze vestigden zich in Israël en de VS. El Wahab begint zijn muzikale carrière als cellist in het Andalusisch Orkest van Jeruzalem. Als hij de traditionele muziek uit de 60′-er jaren uit Jemen hoort, raakt hij zo enthousiast dat hij besluit het orkest te verlaten en zijn eigen band El Khat op te richten. In 2019 verschijnt het debuut-album van deze band met traditionele stukken, gespeeld op zelf gemaakte instrumenten zoals een jerrycan-trommel, een cello gemaakt van een pan of een basbanjo in de vorm van een stalen kom. Op zijn nieuwe album Albat Alawi Op.99 zet hij deze traditie voort: het spelen op zelf gemaakte instrumenten (aangevuld met blazers, orgel, gitaar en piano). De muziek blijft enigszins onveranderd. Dat wil zeggen, hij speelt nog steeds traditioneel repertoire, zij het nu met zelf gecomponeerde stukken in traditionele stijl, met popmuziek-invloeden: “…..in de kern komt het neer op vier akkoorden en een melodie. Het verschil zit hem in de uitdrukking, de expressie”, zo zegt el Wahab zelf. De teksten zijn politiek geladen en handelen over; Ga nooit in het leger, Samen staan we sterk en Behoud je dromen. Het album Albat Alawi Op.99 staat vol opzwepende muziek met rijkelijk veel galm. Dynamisch ook en soms zelfs hallucinerend door de doorlopende dwingende ritmiek. De inventieve combinatie van zelf gemaakt instrumenten, gitaar, blazers en traditionele muziek, zorgen ervoor dat de stukken een prachtige collage vormen van zijn eigen Jemenitische traditie, maar dan op geheel eigen ‘gerecycled’ wijze. Hoe mooi wil je het hebben, fantastisch!

El Khat is the band of musician Eyal el Wahab with whom he plays an unparalleled mix of Yemeni pop & traditional music.

El Khat was founded by Eyal el Wahab. He grew up in Tel Aviv in the Yemeni diaspora. At the end of  the 40’s the Yemeni Jews were forced to leave Yemen. They settled in Israel and the US. El Wahab’s musical career began as a cellist in the Andalusian Orchestra of Jerusalem. When he heard the traditional music from the 60’s from Yemen, he became so enthusiastic that he decided to leave the orchestra. He started his own band El Khat. In 2019 the band released their debut album with traditional pieces played on self-made instruments such as a jerry can drum, a cello made from a pan or a bass banjo in the shape of a steel bowl. On his new album Albat Alawi Op.99 he continues this tradition: playing on self-made instruments (supplemented by wind instruments, organ, guitar and piano). The music remains somewhat unchanged. That is, he still plays traditional repertoire, although, now he wrote his own compositions in the traditional style, with pop music influences: “…..where the soul comes down to four chords and a melody. The difference is in the expression,” says el Wahab himself. The lyrics are politically and deal with; Never join the army, Together we stand strong and Keep your dreams. The album Albat Alawi Op.99 is full of uplifting music with a lot of reverberation. Dynamic too and sometimes even hallucinating because of the continuous compelling rhythms. The inventive combination of self-made instruments, guitar, horns and traditional music ensure that the pieces form a beautiful collage of the Yemeni tradition, but in his own ‘recycled’ way. How beautiful can music be….fantastic!
