Babilonia is het album van de tarantella-vernieuwer Antonio Castrignanò, die met zijn Taranta-Sounds een brug slaat tussen het verleden en heden van deze eeuwenoude Zuid-Italiaanse dansmuziek.

Babilonia is niet alleen het nieuwe album van Antonio Castrignanò, maar ook een album met nieuw gecomponeerde stukken, gebaseerd op de tarantella, de opzwepende Zuid-Italiaanse dans. Castrignanò zegt hier zelf over: “Babilonia is geen traditionele muziek, muziek die al eerder bestond, die terugkijkt. Nee, het is muziek die naar de toekomst kijkt”. Dat hij een wereldse CD heeft gemaakt, blijkt wel uit de muzikale invloeden die te vinden zijn in zijn muziek. Deze invloeden zijn meegebracht door o.a. de Gambiaanse zangeres en kora (Afrikaanse harp)-speelster Sona Jobarteh, de eigentijdse Turkse muzikant / producer Mercan Dede en de Senegalese zangeres Badara Seck. Invloeden die doorschemeren in de arrangementen en de muziek een fraaie, wereldse kleur bezorgen. Zelf is Castrignanò verantwoordelijk voor de composities, de zang en bespeelt hij o.a. de mandola (grote mandoline) en de tambourine, die onontbeerlijk en karakteristiek is voor het snelle (6/8ste) ritme van de tarantella. Verder zijn opvallend: het levendige spel van accordeonist Rocco Nigro en bouzouki en doedelzak van Gianni Gelao. De muziek balanceert dus op de rand van Zuid-Italiaanse folk, gelardeerd met invloeden uit Afrikaanse, Turkse en Indiase muziek. Hierdoor worden de stukken ingenieus en zelfs mystiek. Soms overduidelijk, maar dan weer verborgen in het gebruik van instrumenten, tonaliteit en ritmiek. De teksten handelen over de relatie tussen mens en natuur, liefde, werk en de schoonheid van de vrouw en worden gezongen in diverse talen en dialecten. Babilonia staat vol vurige, bevlogen, opzwepende, melodische muziek en (samen)zang. In deze prachtige cross-over bewijst Antonio Castrignanò dat hij de absolute ambassadeur is van de hedendaagse tarantella en pizzicato uit Salento!

Babilonia is the album by tarantella innovator Antonio Castrignanò. With his Taranta Sounds he creates a cross-over between the past and present of this age-old southern Italian dance music.

Babilonia is not only Antonio Castrignanò’s new album, but also an album with newly composed pieces based on the tarantella, the rousing Southern Italian dance. Castrignanò himself says about this: “Babilonia is not traditional music, music that existed before, that looks back. No, it is music that looks to the future”. That he has recorded a worldly CD is apparent from the musical influences that can be found in his music. These influences have been brought along by, among others, the Gambian singer and kora (African harp) player Sona Jobarteh, the contemporary Turkish musician/producer Mercan Dede and the Senegalese singer Badara Seck. Influences that shine through in the arrangements and give the music a beautiful, worldly color. Castrignanò himself is responsible for the compositions, the vocals and he plays the mandola (large mandolin) and the tambourine, which is indispensable and characteristic for the fast (6/8th) rhythm of the tarantella. Also striking are the lively playing of accordionist Rocco Nigro and bouzouki and bagpipes by Gianni Gelao. The music thus balances on the edge of Southern Italian folk, interspersed with influences from African, Turkish and Indian music. That makes the pieces ingenious and even mystical. Sometimes obvious, but then again hidden in the use of instruments, tonality and rhythm. The lyrics are about the relationship between man and nature, love, work, the beauty of women and are sung in various languages ​​and dialects. Babilonia is full of fiery, inspired, uplifting, melodic music and (harmony) singing. In this beautiful crossover Antonio Castrignanò proves that he is the absolute ambassador of today’s tarantella and pizzicato from Salento!
