Die Schöpfung van Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809) is het meest recente project van de inmiddels legendarische dirigent en musicus Jordi Savall.

Op zijn zestigste schreef Haydn zijn bekendste werk Die Schöpfung, gebaseerd op het ontstaan van de wereld volgens Genesis: hoe God de wereld schiep in zes dagen. De tekst, het libretto, werd geschreven door Gottfried van Swieten (1734 – 1803), ontleend aan het boek Paradise Lost (van John Milton), dat van Swieten herschreef in het Duits. Doordat opdrachtgever Esterhazy in 1790 overleed, raakte Haydn, na 30 jaar, zijn componisten-baan kwijt. Hij bezoekt Londen in 1790 en 1794 en besluit een Oratorium te componeren. Zeker na het beluisteren van Händel’s Messiah, dat hem tot tranen toe ontroerde, was zijn keuze duidelijk. Hij componeerde Die Schöpfung, een omvangrijk werk voor koor, orkest en drie solisten: de aartsengelen Gabriël, Rafaël en Uriël.

De opdrachtmuziek die Joseph Haydn dus jarenlang componeerde voor Esterhazy, had steeds een ‘keurige’ structuur, met een duidelijke orde en regelmaat. In Die Schöpfung gaat Haydn op zoek naar nieuwe klanksensaties die zich al direct aandienen in het eerste deel: Präludium. In een klinkende wereld ontstaat langzaam muzikaal het licht dat door het koor wordt aangezet met ‘Und es war Licht’. Die Schöpfung bestaat uit drie grote delen. In deel 1 worden dag één t/m vier beschreven waarin God het licht, de hemellichamen en de omgeving schept. In deel 2 worden de dieren geschapen en in deel 3 Adam en Eva.

De uitvoeringen van Jordi Savall en het La Capella Reial de Catalunya staan altijd garant voor transparantie en bevlogenheid. De muziek op deze dubbel-CD klinkt fris, helder en straalt rust en zekerheid uit en krijgt een extra lading door het gebruik van authentieke instrumenten. De drie solisten; de Duitsers Matthias Winckhler (bariton) en Tilman Lichdi (tenor) en de Zuid Koreaanse sopraan Yeree Suh, zijn de boegbeelden van de muziek. Zij vertellen (d.m.v. van recitatieven) het scheppingsverhaal. Dat doen ze met verve waarbij ze de muziek voor zich laten spreken. Helaas laat de verstaanbaarheid wat te wensen over, maar dat wordt ruimschoots goedgemaakt door het bijgeleverde boekje waarin het hele libretto, met achtergrondinformatie, is afgedrukt. Sinds de première in 1798 wordt Die Schöpfung jaarlijks uitgevoerd in Wenen, waarmee bewezen wordt hoe tijdloos het werk is. De excellente uitvoering van het orkest met solisten o.l.v. Jordi Savall bewijst dat evenzeer!

Die Schöpfung by Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809) is the most recent project of the legendary conductor and musician Jordi Savall.

At the age of sixty, Haydn wrote his best-known work Die Schöpfung, based on the origin of the world according to Genesis: how God created the world in six days. The text, the libretto, was written by Gottfried van Swieten (1734 – 1803), translated from the book Paradise Lost (by John Milton), which van Swieten rewrote in German. In 1790 Haydn’s monarch Esterhazy died. Haydn lost his job as a composer after 30 years. He visited London in 1790 and 1794 and decided to compose an Oratorio. Certainly after listening to Handel’s Messiah, which moved him to tears, his choice was clear. He composed Die Schöpfung. An extensive work for choir, orchestra and three soloists, the archangels Gabriel, Raphael and Uriël.

The commissioned music, which Joseph Haydn composed for Esterhazy for many years, always had a ‘fine and clear’ structure, with order and regularity. In Die Schöpfung, Haydn goes in search of new sound sensations that manifest themselves immediately in the first movement: Präludium. In a sounding world, the light is slowly turned on by the choir with ‘Und es war Licht’. Die Schöpfung consists of three major parts. Part 1 describes days one to four in which God creates the light, the heavenly bodies and the environment. In part 2 the animals are created and in part 3 Adam and Eve.

Jordi Savall’s performances with his La Capella Reial de Catalunya always guarantee transparency and enthusiasm. The music on this double CD sounds fresh, clear and radiates peace and certainty and is given an extra charge through the use of authentic instruments. The three soloists; German Matthias Winckhler (baritone) and Tilman Lichdi (tenor) and South Korean soprano Yeree Suh are the figureheads of the music. They tell (by means of recitatives) the creation story. They do this with verve, letting the music speak for itself. Unfortunately, the intelligibility leaves something to be desired, but that is more than made up by the accompanying booklet in which the entire libretto, with background information, is printed. Since its premiere in 1798, Die Schöpfung has been performed annually in Vienna. That proves how timeless the work is. The orchestra’s performance with soloists conducted by Jordi Savall proves this as well. Excellent music!
