Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919 – 1996) componeerde vanuit de kern, de ziel van de muziek. Op het album Light in Darkness worden zijn doorwrochte composities met verve uitgevoerd.

De composities van Mieczyslaw Weinberg hebben een doorvoelde lading. De stukken bewegen tussen kleine, intense droefheid en weemoed naar groots en indrukwekkend. Al deze stemmingen zijn vanuit de essentie gecomponeerd. Tussen de noten hoor je de ‘welluidende’ stilte of klinkt de magistrale grootsheid. Op het nieuwe album Light in Darkness horen we de violisten Linus Roth en Janusz Wawrowski, pianist José Gallardo en cellist Danjulo Ishizaka in respectievelijk Piano Trio op. 24, Sonata for 2 Violins op. 69, Songs without Words en Sonatensatz IIWO. 

Violist Roth kwam in aanraking met de muziek van Weinberg in 2010. Getroffen door de intensiteit van de muziek, ging Roth op zoek naar meer werken van deze bijzondere componist. Hij ontdekte stukken waarvan nog geen opname bestond en besloot o.a. de Complete Sonatas op CD te zetten met pianist José Gallardo en het Concerto for violin op. 67 op te nemen met het Deutsches Symphony-Orchester Berlin. 

Het album Light in Darkness opent met Piano Trio op. 24. Een werk met een orkestrale uitstraling, met grote dynamische verschillen die voortreffelijk worden vertolkt door viool, cello en piano. De voordracht en dictie van deze musici is fenomenaal, zelfverzekerd en heeft een overtuigende zeggingskracht. In het vierde deel Finale horen we een reprise van het Iste deel, dat overigens stijlkenmerken heeft van het werk van Cesar Franck. De Sonata for 2 Violins op. 69 is een drie-delig werk dat een bijzondere conversatie is tussen 2 violen. Dit werk componeerde Weinberg voor violiste Elisaweta Giles en Leonid Kogan, voor wie hij ook zijn Vioolconcert schreef. De Songs without Words en Sonatensatz IIWO zijn toegankelijker van aard, hebben duidelijke melodie-lijnen en zijn minder grillig in dynamiek en tonaliteit. Light in Darkness is een bijzonder overzichtsalbum en een ode aan Mieczyslaw Weinberg. Een Joods componist die vluchtte voor het Nazi regime en zijn familie verloor in de WOII, maar desondanks, of misschien wel dankzij deze verschrikkelijke tijd, prachtige muziek componeerde.

Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919 – 1996) composed from the heart, from the soul of the music. His elaborate compositions are performed with verve on the album Light in Darkness.

Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s compositions are deeply moving. The pieces move from small, intense sadness and melancholy to grand and impressive parts. All these moods are composed from the essence. Between the notes you can hear the ‘sounding’ silence or the majestic grandeur. On the new album Light in Darkness we hear the violinists Linus Roth and Janusz Wawrowski, pianist José Gallardo and cellist Danjulo Ishizaka in Piano Trio op 24, Sonata for 2 Violins op. 69, Songs without Words and Sonatensatz IIWO.

Violinist Roth came in contact with Weinberg’s music in 2010. Touched by the intensity of the music, Roth went in search for more works by this special composer. He discovered pieces that had not yet been recorded and decided to put the Complete Sonatas on CD with pianist José Gallardo and the Concerto for violin op. 67, which he recorded with the Deutsches Symphony-Orchester Berlin.

The album Light in Darkness opens with Piano Trio op. 24. A work with an orchestral appearance, with great dynamic differences that are superbly interpreted by violin, cello and piano. The presentation and diction of these musicians is phenomenal, self-assured and has a convincing expressiveness. In the fourth part, Finale, we hear a reprise of the Ist part, which also has style characteristics of Cesar Franck’s compositions. The Sonata for 2 Violins op. 69 is a three-movement work that is a special and exciting conversation between 2 violins. Weinberg composed this work for violinist Elisaweta Giles and Leonid Kogan, for whom he also wrote his Violin Concerto. The Songs without Words and Sonatensatz IIWO are more accessible, have clear melody lines and are less capricious in dynamics and tonality. Light in Darkness is a great overview album and an ode to Mieczyslaw Weinberg. A Jewish composer who fled for the Nazi regime and lost his family in WWII, but nevertheless, or perhaps because of this terrible time, he composed beautiful music.
