De Vlaamse groep MISST brengt een fantastische, wereldse, vocale mix van Europese muziek.

Europa is rijk aan muziek, aan diverse stijlen die karakteristiek zijn voor een land of streek. De Bretonse folk, de Occitaanse (Zuid-Franse) liederen, Hongaarse, IJslandse en de typische Bulgaarse en Sardijnse meerstemmigheid (Orosei), naast de opzwepende folk uit Galicië (Noord-Spanje), tot de Ierse en Nederlandse ballade. Dat maakt Europa een geweldig muzikaal en gevarieerd werelddeel. Het kwintet MISST uit België haalt haar inspiratie uit Europa. Vier vrouwen en een man zingen liederen uit diverse streken. Unisono (eenstemmig) en meerstemmig met voor- en nazang, met begeleidende gastmusici op (bas)gitaar, piano, trompet en drums/percussie. Opvallend mooi hoe dit ensemble steeds de kern van de muziek raakt. Vooral het Ierse Mo Ghile mar, het Bulgaarse Ergen Deda of het lied Levame (uit Galicië) raken het hart van de stijl en worden voortreffelijk gezongen. MISST zingt fraai harmonisch, waarbij de stemmen sterk kleuren en in elkaar grijpen. Hierdoor klinken de vocalen als één sound. Dat vergt van de zangers dat ze niet alleen goed kunnen luisteren maar ook hun stemkleur aanpassen aan elkaar. Duidelijk hoorbaar in Libero me in een arrangement van de legendarische groep Cuncordu de Orosei. Het album sluit af met een compositie van de Nederlandse pianist Bram Vermeulen (1946-2004) van het cabaret-duo Neerlands Hoop in Bange Dagen (samen met Freek de Jonge) van 1968/’79. In een arrangement van de Gentse violist en componist Wouter Vandenabeele is het lied Verlangen omgetoverd tot een miniatuur koorwerkje dat het album in een lichte overpeinzing afsluit.

The Flemish group MISST recorded a fantastic, worldly, vocal mix of European music.

The continent Europe is rich in music. Various styles that make a country or region so characteristic. The Breton folk, the Occitan (southern French) songs, Hungarian, Icelandic and the typical Bulgarian and Sardinian polyphony (Orosei), in addition to the rousing folk from Galicia (Northern Spain), to the Irish and Dutch ballad. That makes Europe a wonderfully musical part of the world. The quintet MISST from Belgium takes their inspiration from Europe. Four women and one man sing songs from various regions, unison, polyphonic with call and respond vocals, accompanied by guest musicians on (bass) guitar, piano, trumpet and drums/percussion. It is striking how this ensemble touches the core of the different styles of music. The Irish Mo Ghile mar, the Bulgarian Ergen Deda or the song Levame (from Galicia) in particular touch the heart of the style and are sung superbly. MISST sings with tight voicing, very harmonically, where the voices color nicely and intertwine. That’s how the voices sound as one. This requires that the singers not only listen carefully to each other but also adapt their voice color to each other. Clearly audible in Libero me in an arrangement by the legendary group Cuncordu de Orosei. The album closes with a composition by the Dutch pianist Bram Vermeulen (1946-2004) of the cabaret duo Neerlands Hoop in Bange Dagen (together with Freek de Jonge) from 1968/’79. In an arrangement by the Ghent violinist and composer Wouter Vandenabeele, the song Verlangen (Desire) has been transformed into a miniature choral piece that closes the album in light contemplation.
