Velen kennen hem nog wel, de frisbee. Dat gekleurde plastic bordje, met opstaande rand dat je naar elkaar gooide op een groot grasveld. Dat is nou precies wat violist Oene van Geel en saxofonist Tom van Dyck hebben gedaan, maar dan in muzikale zin. En niet op een groot grasveld, maar via internet. De wereld zat op slot vanwege corona, maar internet bood mogelijkheden. Beiden musici stuurden elkaar fragmenten, composities en ideeën toe waar ze, afzonderlijk van elkaar, hun eigen partij aan toevoegden. De nieuwe versie ging vervolgens weer retour, als een frisbee, naar de afzender die er weer zijn partij aan toevoegde, enzovoorts. Deze werkwijze is natuurlijk niet nieuw, maar de composities, allen geschreven door beiden heren, zijn dat wel. En hoe! Originele muziek vol vuur en avontuur. Frisbee is een heerlijk muzikaal speelveld waar cross-rhythms (Kenzo Swirling), speelse chromatiek in Slick Rick, georganiseerde chaos in Matric Hip Hop, met gastmuzikant Oguz Büyükberber op de modular, voorbij komen. Een duo-improvisatie in We Met Again, voorafgegaan door de fraaie melodische compositie Rise ’n Shine met gastmusicus Mark Haanstra op de contra-bas. Ja, en als J.S. Bach (1685-1750) een hedendaagse componist zou zijn geweest, had Let The Trees Speak zo van zijn hand kunnen zijn. Een werk vol met psalm-kleuren en een rechte timing op-de-tel. De muziek op dit album komt met zo’n frisbee-snelheid voorbij dat je er even rustig voor moet gaan zitten: ‘wat gebeurt hier allemaal‘. Maar wie daarvoor de tijd neemt, wordt getrakteerd op originele en boeiende muziek!

Frisbee is the title of the new album by viola player Oene van Geel and saxophonist Tom van Dyck. Music that flies, bounces, resonates and vibrates.

Many of you still remember him, the Frisbee. That colored plastic plate with a raised edge that you throw at each other on a large lawn. That is exactly what violinist Oene van Geel and saxophonist Tom van Dyck did, but in a musical sense. And not on a large lawn, but via the internet. The world was locked up because of corona, but the internet offered opportunities. Both musicians sent each other fragments, compositions and ideas to which they, separately from each other, added their own part. The new version then went back, like a frisbee, to the sender who added his part again, and so on. This working method is of course not new, but the compositions are, all written by both gentlemen. And they are great! Original music full of fire and adventure. Frisbee is a wonderful musical playing field with cross-rhythms (Kenzo Swirling), playful chromaticism in Slick Rick, organized chaos in Matric Hip Hop, with guest musician Oguz Büyükberber on the modular. A duo improvisation in We Met Again, preceded by the beautiful melodic composition Rise ’n Shine with guest musician Mark Haanstra on the double bass. Yes, and if the J.S. Bach (1685-1750) was a contemporary composer, the piece Let The Trees Speak could be written by him. A wonderful work full of psalm twists and straight timing. The music on this album comes to you with such a frisbee speed that you have to sit back and relax for a moment: ‘what’s going on here‘. But if you take the time to do so, you will be treated to original and captivating music, and love it for years!
