Nog net op de valreep voor Kerstmis het fantastische album Evening Song uit Polen/Litauen met 16de eeuwse hymnen en psalmen. Vespers, avondliederen die voortreffelijk worden uitgevoerd door vocalisten onder begeleiding van het Ensemble Morgaine.

De avondliederen op de CD Evening Song zijn een metafoor voor de mystiek van de nacht waarin de angst voor de dood wordt weerspiegeld. Deze liederen werden gecomponeerd door Pools/Litouwse componisten uit de 16de eeuw met teksten in het oud-Pools en oud-Litouws. Het repertoire bevat spijtbetuigingen-, gebeds- en dankliederen die schitterend worden gezongen door de gastsolisten: Nora Petročenko en Nerijus Masevičius uit Litouwen en de Poolse zangers Radosław Pachołek en Maciej Gocman. Het Ensemble Morgaine bestaat uit blokfluitiste Mirjam-Luise Münzel, Darius Stabinskas op viola da Gamba, organiste Alina Rotaru en luitist Michele Carreca. 

Bijzonder knap hoe deze musici de composities voor zích laten spreken. Zonder enige opsmuk wordt er gezongen, gespeeld en de juiste hoeveelheid vibrato toegepast waardoor de liederen oprecht klinken, zoals ze ook zijn bedoeld. Het is namelijk niet de instrumentalist of vocalist die belangrijk is, maar de muziek, die in dienst staat van het Hogere. Doordat deze musici begrijpen waar ze mee bezig zijn klinken de uitvoeringen sereen, bevlogen en met innerlijke overtuiging. In de meerstemmige stukken als Exaltabo te, domino (fraai polyfoon), Alleluia! Laudate Domino, het homofone Dobrotliwosc Panska en het a-capella Piesn Wieczorna schitteren de vocalen in één harmonie, in één kleur waarbij de stemmen elkaar zo fraai aanvullen. Op Evening Song staan naast twaalf vocale ook zes instrumentale (solo) stukken o.a. op de luit, klavecimbel, orgel en drie in ensemble zetting. Wie de tijd neemt om deze minder bekende vocal en instrumentale Oost-Europese muziek rustig te beluisteren, zal versteld staan van de tijdloosheid en diepe schoonheid ervan!

Just at the last minute for Christmas a review of the fantastic album Evening Song from Poland / Lithuania with 16th century hymns and psalms. Vespers, evening songs, excellently performed by Ensemble Morgaine and vocalists.

The songs on the album Evening Song CD are a metaphor for the night in which the mystique fear of death is reflected. These songs were composed by 16th century Polish / Lithuanian composers with lyrics in Old Polish and Old Lithuanian. The repertoire includes songs of regret, prayer and thanksgiving, beautifully sung by the soloists: Nora Petročenko and Nerijus Masevičius from Lithuania and the Polish singers Radosław Pachołek and Maciej Gocman. The Ensemble Morgaine consists of recorder player Mirjam-Luise Münzel, Darius Stabinskas on viola da Gamba, organist Alina Rotaru and lute player Michele Carreca.

Very clever how these musicians let the compositions speak for themselves. Without any frills, they sing, play and apply the right amount of vibrato so that the songs sound intimate, as they are intended. For it is not the instrumentalist or vocalist that is the most important, but the music that serves the Higher. Because these musicians understand what they are doing, the performances sound serene, inspired and with inner conviction. In the polyphonic pieces such as Exaltabo te, domino (beautiful polyphonic), Alleluia! Laudate Domino, the homophonic Dobrotliwosc Panska and the a-capella Piesn Wieczorna shine the vocals in one harmony, in one color where the voices complement each other so beautifully. In addition to twelve vocal pieces, Evening Song also features six instrumental (solo) pieces, including on the lute, harpsichord, organ and three in ensemble setting. Anyone who takes the time to listen carefully to this lesser-known vocal and instrumental Eastern European music, will be amazed by its timeless and endless beauty!
