Het Babylon ORCHESTRA is een schitterend samenwerkingsproject uit Berlijn. Het orkest bestaat uit meer dan twintig musici uit meer dan tien verschillende landen. Een super multiculti ‘bigband’ waarvan nu de eerste CD verschijnt.

In Nederland was het San Graatsma, een musicus en producer uit Eindhoven, die in de jaren ’90 schitterende albums uitbracht met asielzoekers, de migranten van nu. Door Graatsma werd deze migranten, die uit alle delen van de wereld afkomstig waren, de mogelijkheid geboden om hun (nationale) muziek op te nemen en uit te brengen op CD bij zijn label Mosaique Vivant. Het Babylon ORCHESTRA uit Berlijn heeft een soortgelijke opzet. Het ensemble richt zich op het uitvoeren van Europese muziek met invloeden uit het Midden Oosten en jazz & geïmproviseerde muziek. De band werd opgericht in 2016 door Mischa Tangran en Sofia Surgutschowa. Een violist en componist uit Moskou die via zijn opleidingen terecht kwam in Düsseldorf, Londen en uiteindelijk Berlijn. Hij heeft de leiding over het orkest en componeerde een aantal stukken voor dit debuut-album van het Babylon ORCHESTRA. Door de vele muziekstijlen die aan bod komen, is de muziek avontuurlijk. Veel stukken klinken bombastisch met sterke ritmes zoals de opzwepende Balkan-sound in Arabesca Romanesca, de vlammende unisono melodieën in Between Carthage and Rome of het filmische 78 Sky, met een hoofdrol voor de santur-speler Osama Abdulrasol die het stuk ook componeerde (zie youtube). Stevige funk en jazz-contouren vinden we in Reborn van ud-speler MAias Alyamani. Het traditionele lied Üsküdare (ooit een hit van Eartha Kitt) is een van de twee vocale stukken op deze gevarieerde CD. Een Joods-Sefardisch lied, waarin ook de schitterende Armeense duduk (door Deniz Mahir Kartal) te horen is, wordt gezongen door Rebal Alkhodan. Nour, het 2de vocale stuk, wordt gezongen door de Koerdische zangeres Hani Mojtahedy (zie youtube). De arrangementen zitten vakkundig in elkaar, waarbij ingenieus gebruik wordt gemaakt van Arabische instrumenten zoals de darbouka (vaastrommel; prachtig in Bazar), de ney (Arabische fluit), de ûd (Arabische luit), de santur (hakkebord) en de spike-fiddle die prachtig kleuren tegen o.a. de westerse drums, piano, (bas)gitaar) en viool. Uit dit bijzondere album blijkt maar weer eens hoe mooi muziek culturen verbindt. Hoe het musici met elkaar verbindt die, met respect voor elkaars cultuur, een schitterende cross-over laten horen. Iets waar de wereldleiders van vandaag veel van kunnen leren en wij, als luisteraars, optimaal van kunnen genieten!

The Babylon ORCHESTRA is a wonderful collaborative project from Berlin. The orchestra consists of more than twenty musicians from more than ten different countries. A super multi-culti ‘big band’.  Their début CD is out now.

In the ’90s it was San Graatsma, a musician and producer from the Netherlands (Eindhoven), who released beautiful albums with asylum seekers, the migrants of today. Graatsma offered these migrants from all over the world the opportunity to record their (national) music and release it on his label Mosaique Vivant. The Babylon ORCHESTRA from Berlin has a similar set-up. The ensemble focuses on performing European music with Middle Eastern influences and jazz & improvised music. The band was formed by Mischa Tangran and Sofia Surgutschowa in 2016. A violinist and composer from Moscow who, through his studies, ended up in Düsseldorf, London and eventually in Berlin. He directs the orchestra and composed a number of pieces for this debut album of the Babylon ORCHESTRA. The music is adventurous because of the many music styles that are used. Many pieces sound bombastic with strong rhythms such as the stirring Balkan sound in Arabesca Romanesca, the flaming unison melodies in Between Carthage and Rome or the cinematic piece 78 Sky, with a lead role for the santur player Osama Abdulrasol, who also composed the piece (see youtube above). Solid funk and jazz adventurous we find in the piece Reborn by ûd player MAias Alyamani. The traditional song Üsküdare (once a hit by Eartha Kitt) is one of two vocal pieces on this varied CD. A Jewish Sephardic song sung by Rebal Alkhodan, featuring the beautiful Armenian duduk (by Deniz Mahir Kartal). Nour, the second vocal piece, is sung by Kurdish singer Hani Mojtahedy (see youtube above). The arrangements are expertly put together, making ingenious use of Arabic instruments such as the darbouka (vase drum; beautiful in Bazar), the ney (Arabic flute), the oud (Arabic lute), the santur (dulcimer) and the spike fiddle, which colours beautifully against Western drums, piano, (bass) guitar) and violin. This great album shows once again how music connects cultures. How it connects musicians who, with respect for each other’s culture, create a wonderful crossover. Today’s world leaders can learn a lot from this way of working and we, the listeners, can enjoy to the fullest! Splendid project.
