Stabat Mater is de titel van de nieuwste CD van de Noorse musicus en componist Kjetil Bjerkestrand. Muziek die in geen hokje geplaatst kan worden en op de rand zweeft van pop- en klassieke muziek. Religieus georiënteerd, met stukken als Kyrie, Dies Irae, Stabat Mater en een ongekend mooi Into Paradise.

Kjetil Bjerkestrand is een muzikant, producer en arrangeur. Van huis uit leert hij het orgel bespelen en begint al vroeg met het componeren van muziek voor o.a. films en T.V. series. Werkte met bekende artiesten als Ray Charles, Keith Emerson (van Emerson Lake & Palmer), John Lord (organist van Deep Purple) en de groep Aha.

Als Bjerkestrand een aantal jaren geleden van zijn dokter te horen krijgt dat hij het wat rustiger aan moet doen, besluit hij om muziek te gaan schrijven waar geen deadline aan vast zit. Gewoon muziek componeren die klaar is als het af is, en niet klaar is omdat een producent van een bepaalde serie of film daarom vraagt. Dat gaf hem rust, alle vrijheid en tijd om muziek voor het album Stabat Mater te componeren. En die rust en (muzikale) vrijheid straalt af van deze bijzondere CD in een cross-over van klassieke en popmuziek waarbij het onduidelijk is waar die scheiding ligt. En dat is ook het interessante aan zijn muziek. Voortdurend schakelt hij in beide richtingen. Het album begint met de Introduction, dat verwijst naar de Introïtus van het eerste deel van een Requiem (Dodenmis). Die Requiem-verwijzing vinden we bij Bjerkestrand ook terug in het Kyrie en het Dies Irae, respectievelijk het 2de en 5de deel van een Requiem. Het Stabat Mater verwijst natuurlijk naar het origineel (weliswaar met aangepaste tekst). Een middeleeuws gedicht (in het Latijn) waarin Maria, moeder Gods, weent aan het kruis van Jezus. Bjerkestrand maakt gebruik van synthesizer, viool en solisten van het Trondheim Orkest. Deze combinatie geeft de muziek een enorme zeggingskracht. Niet in de laatste plaats door zangeres Live Maria Roggen, die met haar kristalheldere stem overtuigend boven de muziek uitstraalt. Prachtige melodieën worden gekleurd en gekoesterd in een ingenieuze cross-over van synthesizer, strijkers en percussie. Soms magistraal, dan weer ingetogen met instrumentale gedeeltes. Het resultaat is een album met een enorme aantrekkingskracht dat bij herhaaldelijke beluistering steeds boeiender wordt, met als afsluiter het fenomenale Into Paradise. Een ode aan de vader van Kjetil Bjerkestrand, die overleed tijdens de opname van dit persoonlijke album.

Stabat Mater is the title of the last CD by the Norwegian musician, composer and keyboard player Kjetil Bjerkestrand. Music that floats on the edge of pop and classical music. Religiously oriented with pieces like Kyrie, Dies Irae, Stabat Mater and an incredible beautiful Into Paradise.

Kjetil Bjerkestrand is a musician, producer and arranger. At en early age he learned to play the organ and started composing music for films and T.V. series. He worked with famous artists such as Ray Charles, Keith Emerson (from Emerson Lake & Palmer), John Lord (organist of Deep Purple) and the band Aha.

A few years ago Bjerkestrand was told by his doctor that he needs to slow down a bit. He decided to write music without a deadline. Simply compose music that is ready when it is finished, and that it is not ready because a producer of a certain series or film requests it. That gave him all the freedom and time to compose music for the album Stabat Mater. And this (musical) freedom radiates from his special Stabat Mater CD in a crossover of classical and pop music. And that makes his music absolutely interesting. It constantly moves into both directions. The album begins with the Introduction, which refers to the Introïtus, the first part of a Requiem. That Requiem reference can also be found at Bjerkestrand’s music in the Kyrie and Dies Irae, respectively the 2nd and 5th part of a Requiem. The Stabat Mater, of course, refers to the original (with adapted lyrics). A medieval poem (in Latin) in which Mary, the mother of God, weeps on the cross of Jesus. Bjerkestrand uses synthesizer, violin and soloists from the Trondheim Orchestra. The use of this combination gives the music enormous expressiveness. Especially the voice of singer Live Maria Roggen, who radiates convincingly above the music with her crystal clear voice. Beautiful melodies are coloured and cherished in an ingenious crossover of synthesizer, strings and percussion. Sometimes magisterial, sometimes subdued with instrumental parts. The result is an album with enormous appeal that becomes more and more interesting after a few times listening. The final piece is the phenomenal Into Paradise. An ode to the father of Kjetil Bjerkestrand, who died while he was recording this personal album.
