De Italiaanse musicus Giovanni Albini (1982) is een relatief onbekende componist. Er zijn enkele CD’s met werk van hem op de markt (via Brilliant Classics) met koorwerken en kamermuziek. Op het nieuwe album ‘String Quartets’ van het Italiaanse Quartetto Indaco staan negen fantastische strijkkwartetten, gecomponeerd door Albini.

Op dit nieuwe album van Quartetto Indaco staan, zoals gezegd, negen strijkkwartetten. Deze werden gecomponeerd tussen 2003 en 2018 door Giovanni Albini. Een compositie voor strijkkwartet heeft van origine vier delen. Bij Giovanni Albini is het zijn muzikaal statement dat bepaalt hoeveel delen zijn strijkkwartetten hebben. Met andere woorden: wat hij muzikaal wil vertellen, bepaalt het aantal delen. Zo heeft alleen strijkkwartet no 8 – vier delen en de rest varieert tussen een, twee of drie delen. Albini schreef in het verleden muziek voor video, multimedia, commercials, televisie en film op geheel eigen wijze. Zijn muziek is enerzijds geënt op oude muziek (renaissance) en anderzijds op moderne muziek, met gebruik van eigentijdse muziektheorieën, waarbij de muziek wordt gecomponeerd vanuit een wiskundige benadering (zoals we dat bijvoorbeeld ook tegenkomen in de dodecafonie). Dat maakt zijn muziek boeiend en avontuurlijk. Maar hoe de muziek ook is gecomponeerd, hoe ingenieus bedacht, het gaat er tenslotte om of de stukken je aanspreken of niet. De crux van de muziek van Albini is de balans. In een cohesie van eigentijdse klanken en oude muziek creëert hij muziek waar melancholie en geestdrift elkaar schitterend aantrekken en afwijzen. Bovendien zijn melodie en klankkleur uiterst belangrijk en vormen een essentieel deel van zijn composities. Ook speelwijzen (en soms effecten) als glissandi, flageolet-tonen en pizzicato vormen daarin een belangrijk onderdeel. Maar hoe dan ook, en dat is belangrijk, de melodie is en blijft steeds aanwezig, hoe verborgen ook soms. De compositorisch verschillende lagen binnen elk stuk worden prachtig uitgekristalliseerd gespeeld door het Quartetto Indaco. Dit kwartet etaleert hiermee fraai ensemble-spel waarin het moeiteloos wisselt van speelstijl en zich probleemloos aanpast aan de verschillende timbres. De composities van Albini zijn geen alledaagse muziek-kost. Maar wie de moeite neemt om met een open geest te luisteren, wordt getrakteerd op een rijk gevuld strijkkwartet idioom. En dat is genieten!

The Italian musician Giovanni Albini (1982) is a relatively unknown composer. There are a few CDs recorded with his compositions (released by Brilliant Classics) with choral works and chamber music. On the new album ‘String Quartets’ by the Italian Quartetto Indaco are nine fantastic string quartets, composed by Albini.

As mentioned, there are nine string quartets on this new album played by Quartetto Indaco. These quartets were composed between 2003 and 2018 by Giovanni Albini. Originally, a composition for string quartet has four parts. Giovanni Albini musical statement determines how many parts his string quartets consists. In other words: what he wants to tell musically, determines the number of parts. For example, only string quartet no 8 has four parts and the rest varies between one, two or three parts. In the past, Albini wrote music for video, multimedia, commercials, television and film in his own unique way. On one hand his music is based on old music (renaissance) and on the other hand on modern music. He uses contemporary music theories, whereby the music is composed from a mathematical approach (as we also find in the dodecaphony for example). That makes his music fascinating and adventurous. But in fact, no matter how the music is composed, no matter how ingeniously devised, it is ultimately about whether the pieces appeal to you or not. The crux of Albini’s music is the balance. In a lovely cohesion of contemporary sounds and early music. He creates music where melancholy and enthusiasm attract and reject each other. Moreover, melody and timbre are extremely important and form an essential part of his compositions. The way of playing of his string quartets (and sometimes effects) such as glissandi, flageolet tones and pizzicato also form an important part of this. And, very important, the melody will always be present, no matter how hidden it sometimes may be. The different layers within each piece are played beautifully and splendid crystallized by the Quartetto Indaco. This quartet plays tight, changing easily between the various timbres. The compositions of Albini are not easy music. But anyone who takes the time to listen with an open mind is treated to a richly filled string quartet idiom. And that is enjoyment!
