De Noorse pianist Ketil Bjørnstad nam in 2004 en in 2013/2017 vier solo-albums op in de oude en nieuwe Rainbow Studio’s in Oslo met de vermaarde studiotechnicus Jan Erik Kongshaug. Deze vier CD’s zijn nu opnieuw uitgebracht in de prachtige box ‘The Rainbow Sessions – New Edition’ met tintelende pianowerken.

Sinds de klassiek geschoolde pianist Ketil Bjørnstad zich bezighoudt met jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek heeft hij een aantal bijzondere CD’s op de markt gebracht waaronder de vier solo-albums die nu gebundeld zijn in het doosje ‘The Rainbow Sessions – New Edition’. Ketil Bjørnstad was de laatste pianist die in 2004 opnames maakte in de oude Rainbow Studio en hij was de eerste die opnames in de nieuwe Rainbow Studio. Deze tracks zijn op drie CD’s verschenen die werden uitgebracht in 2006 onder de naam ‘The Rainbow Sessions’. Nu, in 2019, komen deze ‘The Rainbow Sessions’ opnieuw op de markt maar nu als ‘New Edition’ met de extra CD: ‘The Third Instrument’. Dit album refereert aan de 3de Steinway vleugel die in 2012 in gebruik werd genomen in de Rainbow Studio en waarop Bjørnstad solowerken opnam tussen 2013 en 2017 die nu dus op dit vierde album zijn verschenen.

Ketil Bjørnstad speelt overwegend eigen werk dat op de rand balanceert van klassieke, geïmproviseerde en (Noorse) volksmuziek. Nergens is de muziek één stijl: steeds wisselen stijlen elkaar af. Soms per fragment, maar ook per deel of zelfs per maat. Overwegend rustige piano-solo stukken met een meditatief, ietwat dromerig karakter die zelfbewust worden gespeeld. Zijn composities zijn eigenlijk een soort ‘Lieder ohne Worte’ zoals we die ook tegenkomen bij Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Ketil Bjørnstad is een begenadigd pianist die zingt via zijn instrument. Met een innemend touché tilt hij de melodie uit boven de begeleiding in een atmosfeer waarbij het lijkt alsof hij de thema’s ter plekke bedenkt. Bijzonder fraai is ook de bewerking van het immens mooie ‘Miserere’ (van Allegri) dat Bjørnstad transformeert tot een psalm-achtige melodie of het ‘Intermezzo Op. 118 no. 2’ van Johannes Brahms waarmee hij bewijst dat hij naast een bijzonder componist ook een groot vertolker is. Wie de muziek van deze geweldige Noorse pianist nog niet kent, deze box ‘The Rainbow Sessions – New Edition’ biedt  een prachtige kennismaking!

The Norwegian pianist Ketil Bjørnstad recorded four solo albums in 2004 and 2013/2017 in the old and new Rainbow Studios in Oslo with the renowned studio technician Jan Erik Kongshaug. These four CDs have now been re-released in the beautiful box ‘The Rainbow Sessions – New Edition’ with great piano works.

Since the classically trained pianist Ketil Bjørnstad play jazz and improvised music, he has released a number of special CDs, including the four solo albums that are now bundled in the box ‘The Rainbow Sessions – New Edition’. In 2004 Ketil Bjørnstad was the last pianist to record in the old Rainbow Studio and he was the first to record in the new Rainbow Studio. In 2006 these tracks were released on three CDs under the name ‘The Rainbow Sessions’. Now, in 2019, ‘The Rainbow Sessions’ will be released again, but now as ‘New Edition’ with the extra CD: ‘The Third Instrument’. The name of the album refers to the 3rd Steinway grand piano that was taken into use in 2012 in the Rainbow Studio and on which Bjørnstad recorded solo works between 2013 and 2017, released on this fourth album.

Ketil Bjørnstad mainly play his own compositions that balances on the edge of classical, improvised and (Norwegian) folk music. You cannot put his music into one style. His music always alternate. Sometimes per fragment, but also per part or even per beat. Mostly quiet piano-solo pieces with a meditative, somewhat dreamy character that are played with self-confidence. His compositions are actually a kind of ‘Lieder ohne Worte’ as we also encounter at Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s music. Ketil Bjørnstad is a gifted pianist who sings through his instrument. With an engaging touché he lifts the melody above the accompaniment in an atmosphere where it seems as if he creates the melodies on the spot. Particularly beautiful is the arrangement of the immensely beautiful ‘Miserere’ (by Allegri) that transforms Bjørnstad into a psalm-like melody or the ‘Intermezzo Op. 118 no. 2’ by Johannes Brahms with which he proves to be not only a special composer but also a great performer. For those who do not yet know the music of this great Norwegian pianist, ‘The Rainbow Sessions – New Edition’ are a wonderful introduction!
