Lemma is een vrouwengroep uit Algerije, geïnitieerd door Souad Asla die samen met Hasna el Bécharia de kern vormt van Lemma. Elf bevlogen musici die verschillende stijlen muziek spelen en zingen uit de Saoura regio. Een streek in Algerije die zo’n duizend kilometer verwijderd ligt van de Middellandse Zee.

Heel bijzonder is de groep Lemma. Elf vrouwen spelen en zingen diverse stijlen uit Kenadsa (Saoura regio) in West-Algerije, dicht bij de grens met Marokko. Als Souad Asla terugkeert naar Kenadsa, wordt ze geraakt door de muziek uit haar geboortestreek. Ze besluit de groep Lemma op te richten en de rijke muziekcultuur wereldkundig te maken. Het resultaat is een gezelschap van bevlogen musici die met souplesse musiceert. Van oorsprong was het verboden voor vrouwen om muziek buitenshuis te spelen, maar daar komt nu verandering in, om te beginnen met dit album. Hasna El Bécharia is de enige muzikante die naast zang ook banjo en gumbri (Noord-Afrikaanse banjo) bespeelt. Alle andere vrouwen zingen en spelen percussie, waaronder de bendir, de frame-drum. Ze spelen allemaal hetzelfde ritme wat de muziek erg sterk maakt. Bovendien maakt dit ritmische samenspel samen met eenstemmige liederen, met voor- en nazang, en veel unisono vocalen, de muziek indrukwekkend en bezwerend. Op dit album zijn verschillende stijlen te horen waaronder de Al-farda. Een Arab-Andalusische stijl die gebaseerd is op ritme, en in dit geval het ritme van de ‘farda’, ‘de schoen’, waarmee het basisritme werd gestampt op een leeg metalen vat. Of de (al-)Zaffàni, een typisch ‘vrouwenstijl’ uit Kenadsa die wordt gezongen tijdens geboortefeesten en bruiloften. Een andere stijl is de Hadra die, net zoals de Gnáwa, religieus van aard is, met gebruik van de qraqeb, de metalen castagnetten. Lemma heeft een ontegenzeglijke overtuigingskracht met liefde voor de cultuur, liefde voor de muziek die uit alle poriën van dit bijzondere album sijpelt.

Lemma is a women’s group from Algeria, initiated by Souad Asla and Hasna el Bécharia. Both women are the heart of Lemma. Eleven enthusiastic musicians playing and singing different styles from the Saoura region in Algeria, about a thousand kilometers away from the Mediterranean.

Very special is the Lemma group. Eleven women play and sing various styles from Kenadsa (Saoura region) in the west of Algeria, close to the border of Morocco. When initiator Souad Asla returns to her native region, she heard the power of the music she heard as a child. She decides to set up the Lemma group and make this rich music culture public. The result is an esemble of enthusiastic musicians who create this lovely music. Originally it was forbidden for women to make music outdoors. But that is changing now, as we can hear on this album. Hasna El Bécharia is the only musician who (besides singing) also plays banjo and gumbri (North African banjo). All the other women sing and play percussion, including the bendir, the frame drum. They all play the same rhythm which makes the music magic and very rhythmic. They sing unison songs, and songs with call- and respons vocals. Impressive and enchanting. On this album various styles can be heard, including the Al-farda. An Arab-Andalusian style based on rhythm, in this case the rhythm of the ‘farda’, ’the shoe’, the basic-rhythm which was stamped on an empty metal barrel. Or the (al-) Zaffàni, a typical ‘women’s style’ from Kenadsa that is sung during birth celebrations and weddings. Another style is the Hadra, which, like the Gnáwa, religious music. In the Gnáwa they use the quaraqeb, the recognisable metal castanets. Lemma has an undeniable power of persuasion, with a love for culture, love for the music that is all over the place on this the special album.
