‘Mare Nostrum III’ is de derde CD van drie fantastische musici uit drie verschillende landen; trompettist Paolo Fresu uit Italië (Sardinië), de Franse accordeonist Richard Galliano en pianist Jan Lundgren uit Zweden. In een rijk muzikaal palet zijn ze te horen in de jazz, klassieke en de folk-traditie.

Drie top musici etaleren het ‘geluid van Europa’ dat ergens ligt tussen Zweden, Frankrijk en Italië. In een verbluffend arsenaal aan sterke composities, groot gevoel voor melodie, improvisatie-kracht en voortreffelijk samenspel, lukt het deze muzikanten een fraaie Europese klank te creëren. Een sound die ergens balanceert op de rand van jazz, folk en de klassieke traditie met een duidelijke voorkeur voor melodie en groot sentiment voor muzikale poëzie. Thema’s worden fijnzinnig gearrangeerd met ruimte voor improvisatie. Fraai zijn ‘Blues sur Seine’ waar een koele lentebries langzaam wuift over het water van deze Franse rivier. Het beweeglijke pianospel van ‘Love Land’ dat met een unisono gespeeld thema op trompet/accordeon overgoten wordt, gevolgd door een heerlijke duo-solo van trompet en accordeon. Opvallend is ook het fraaie piano/accordeonspel in ‘Le jardin des Fées’. Een compositie opgedragen aan de Franse jazzviolist Didier Lockwood die begin 2018 in Parijs aan een hartaanval overleed, 62 jaar oud. ‘Del Soldato in trincea’ (van Fresu) heeft een erg mooi koraal timbre en komt uit de film ‘Torneranno i prati’ (over de Iste W.O). Jan Lundgren schreef ‘Ronneby’ dat twinkelt met een opgewekte melodie. ‘The magic stroll’ is een muzikale metafoor voor het flaneren over de boulevard van Parijs met heerlijk arpeggio-rijk accordeonspel….en zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan. ‘Mare nostrum III’ is een pracht-CD en het antwoord van drie Europese musici die uitgaan van de kern van de muziek: met minder noten meer muziek. En dat is verdomd goed gelukt!

Three top musicians play the ‘sound of Europe’ that lies somewhere between Sweden, France and Italy. In an amazing arsenal of strong compositions, great sense of melody, improvisation power and excellent interplay, these musicians succeed in creating a beautiful European sound. A sound that balances somewhere on the edge of jazz, folk and classical tradition, with a clear preference for melody and great sentiment for musical poetry. Themes are fine-tuned with space for improvisation. Beautiful are ‘Blues sur Seine’. A composition in which a cool spring breeze waves slowly over the water of this French river. The lively piano play of ‘Love Land’ that is topped with a unison on trumpet / accordion theme, followed by a delightful duo solo of trumpet and accordion. Also striking is the beautiful piano / accordion play in ‘Le jardin des Fées’. This composition is dedicated to the French jazz violinist Didier Lockwood who died in Paris of a heart attack early 2018, 62 years old. ‘Del Soldato in trincea’ (by Fresu) has a very beautiful choral timbre and comes from the movie ‘Torneranno i prati’ (about he First World War). Jan Lundgren wrote ‘Ronneby’ that twinkles with a cheerful melody. ‘The magic stroll’ is a musical metaphor for strolling along the boulevard of Paris with a wonderful arpeggio-rich accordion play…. And there’s is so much more great music on’Mare nostrum III’ a beautiful CD. The answer of three European musicians who start from the heart of music: the less you play, the more music. And that’s what they do, splendid!
