In het westen van Mexico ligt de kuststreek Costa Chica, een gebied waar veel geweld en armoede heerst. Maar het is ook een gebied waar de prachtige Mexicaanse bolero vandaan komt. Vijf artiesten van dit bijzondere genre zijn nu te vinden op het compilatie-album ‘Mexico, The best boleros from the Costa Chica‘.

Alvaro Carrillo (1921-1969) was de innovator van de Mexicaanse bolero. Een zanger die met veel gevoel en passie zijn liederen zong en er meer dan 300 componeerde, waaronder veel bolero’s met hits als ‘Amor mío’, ‘Sabor a mí’ en ‘Como se lleva un lunar’. Alhoewel het bijna meer dan 50 jaar geleden is dat hij overleed, is zijn muziek nog steeds zeer populair in Mexico. Op deze compilatie-CD zingen Pedro Torres, Fidela Pelàez, Chogo Prudente, Los Tres Amuzgos en kwartet Las Hermanas Garcia, (met de zusjes Laura en Celia García) veel werk van deze veel te vroeg overleden zanger en liedjesschrijver.

De bolero heeft een duidelijke liedstructuur met couplet, refrein aangevuld met gitaarsolo’s. Gedragen muziek, langzaam in tempo met teksten over de liefde, vriendschap, ziekte en religie. Op deze CD ‘Mexico, The best boleros from the Costa Chica‘ horen we de bolero in verschillende bezettingen. Pedro Torres begeleidt zichzelf op gitaar en wordt bijgestaan door Alberto Urbán op requinto gitaar (kleine gitaar). Zangeres Fidela Pelaez valt op door haar hese stem met lichte trilling die zeer goed past bij het genre. Haar vinden we in begeleiding van gitaar, requinto gitaar, bongo en basgitaar. Zanger Chogo Prudente valt op door de ‘snik’ in zijn vocalen die in ‘Luz de luna’ goed tot zijn recht komt. De meerstemmigheid van Los Tres Amuzgos is prachtig, zeker in het lied ‘Cancer’ (Kanker) dat wordt opgedragen aan de moeder van een medestudent die overleed aan deze ongeneeslijke ziekte. Aandoenlijk zijn Celia en Laura Hermanas die samen met vader Mariano en bassist Cesar Adrián Rayna enkele stukken zingen. Niet helemaal zuiver, maar de passie en de hartstocht waarmee deze zusjes hun liedjes brengen is ontroerend. Alle muziek op ‘Mexico, The best boleros from the Costa Chica‘  is speciaal voor dit album opgenomen in 2016 en biedt een mooi overzicht van de bolero en van de ‘bijna’ vergeten klassiekers van Alvaro Carrillo.

In the west of Mexico lies the coastal region of Costa Chica, an area with a lot of violence and poverty. But it is also an area where the beautiful Mexican bolero comes from. Five artists of this special genre can now be found on the compilation album ‘Mexico, The best boleros from the Costa Chica’.

Alvaro Carrillo (1921-1969) was the innovator of the Mexican bolero. A singer who sings his songs with a lot of passion and composed more than 300, including many boleros with hits like ‘Amor mío’, ‘Sabor a mí’ and ‘Como se lleva un lunar’. Although he died almost more than 50 years ago, he is still very popular in Mexico. On this compilation CD the musicians Pedro Torres, Fidela Pelaez, Chogo Prudente, Los Tres Amuzgos and the quartet Las Hermanas Garcia (with the sisters Laura and Celia García) sing a lot of songs by this wonderful songwriter who died much to young.

The bolero has a clear song structure with verse, chorus supplemented with guitar solos. In a way, solemnly music, slow in tempo with lyrics about love, friendship, illness and religion. On this CD ‘Mexico, The best boleros from the Costa Chica’ we hear the bolero in different settings. Pedro Torres accompanies himself on guitar and is assisted by Alberto Urbán on requinto guitar (small guitar). Singer Fidela Pelaez stands out for her hoarse voice with a slight vibration that fits very well with the genre. We find her in accompaniment of guitar, requinto guitar, bongo and bass guitar. Singer Chogo Prudente stands out because of the sob in his voice, lovely in ‘Luz de luna’. The polyphony of Los Tres Amuzgos is beautiful, especially in the song ‘Cancer’ (Cancer) that is dedicated to the mother of a fellow student who died of this incurable disease. Celia and Laura Hermanas, are assisted by their father Mariano and bassist Cesar Adrián Rayna, sing a few pieces. With great passion these sisters sing their songs which is really moving. All music on ‘Mexico, The best boleros from the Costa Chica’ was specially recorded for this album in 2016 and offers a nice overview of the ‘almost’ forgotten classics of Alvaro Carrillo.
