Het blokfluitkwartet Brisk geeft op hun nieuwe CD ‘Cancao, muziek van het Iberisch Schiereiland’ een prachtig exposé van bewerkte composities voor blokfluit. Er klinkt oude muziek uit de 15de eeuw maar ook werken uit de 16e en 17e eeuw aangevuld met modern repertoire dat speciaal voor dit album is gecomponeerd door Gijs Levelt en Toek Numan.

Composities arrangeren voor blokfluit, dat doet het Brisk kwartet al jaren. Op hun nieuwe album ‘Cancao, muziek van het Iberisch Schiereiland’ richten ze hun muzikale pijlen op de muziek uit Spanje en Portugal. Op veertig verschillende blokfluiten spelen deze virtuozen liedbewerkingen uit de middeleeuwen, renaissance en de 19e en 20ste eeuw, zoals twee stukken van de grote Spaanse componist Francisco de Penalosa (1470-1528). De CD opent met twee religieuze werken van deze destijds in Sevilla wonende en werkende componist. Tijdgenoot van de Portugees Pedro de Escobar (1465-1535) die het prachtige ‘Sumens illud ave‘ componeerde dat met zijn liggende tonen aan het begin van de compostie verstild aandoet. Het wereldlijk klinkende ‘Segunda Susana Grosada‘ is opmerkelijk fris van toon net zoals het daaropvolgende ‘Negra Sombra‘ van Juan Montes Capón (componist uit Galicië/Noord-Spanje) die leefde in de 2e helft van de 19de eeuw. Componist Gijs Levelt (1973/trompettist van de Amsterdam Klezmer Band) componeerde ‘Romanza Belinfante‘. Een hedendaagse compositie gebaseerd op een Sefardische melodie met gedurfde harmonieën en speeltechnieken waarbij de tonen hier en daar afbuigen. Een speeltechniek die we ook tegenkomen in de Rococo en daar flattement genoemd wordt. Het werk ‘Vientos Ibéricos’ (van Toek Numan-1971) is een nieuwe compositie die zich kenmerkt door het repeteren van korte tonen, waardoor het werk richting minimal music buigt. Het Brisk Recorder Quartet Amsterdam is een voortreffelijk blokfluitkwartet met een coherente uitstraling. Een kwartet dat uitblinkt in eenheid. Natuurlijk, zoals een kwartet ook hoort te klinken, maar Brisk speelt dit divers repertoire met zo’n gemak en de muziek klinkt zó vanzelfsprekend dat het lijkt alsof het ze geen moeite kost. Maar dáár zit nou juist het vakmanschap, absolute klasse!

On their new CD ‘Cancao, music from the Iberian Peninsula’ the recorder quartet Brisk Recorder Quartet Amsterdam gives a beautiful exposé of arranged compositions for the recorder. They play old music from the 15th century, but also compositions from the 16th and 17th century supplemented with modern repertoire composed especially for this album by Gijs Levelt and Toek Numan.

For some time the Brisk Recorder Quartet Amsterdam arranged compositions for recorder. On their new album ‘Cancao, music from the Iberian Peninsula‘ they focus on the music from Spain and Portugal. On forty different recorders, these virtuosos play songs from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the 19th and 20th century, such as two pieces by the great Spanish composer Francisco de Penalosa (1470-1528). This CD opens with two religious works by this musician, who lived and worked in Sevilla at the time. Contemporary of the Portuguese Pedro de Escobar (1465-1535) who composed the beautiful ‘Sumens illud ave‘. A nice piece with static notes in the beginning which gives the music a religious mood. The worldly sounding piece ‘Segunda Susana Grosada‘ is remarkably fresh in tone, just like the following ‘Negra Sombra‘ by Juan Montes Capón (composer from Galicia / Northern Spain) who lived in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Composer Gijs Levelt (1973 / trumpet player of the Amsterdam Klezmer Band) composed ‘Romanza Belinfante‘. A contemporary composition based on a Sephardic melody with new harmonies and playing techniques where the tones here and there deflect. A playing technique that we also encounter in the Rococo, called flattement. The work ‘Vientos Ibéricos‘ (by Toek Numan /1971) is also a new composition that is characterized by the repetitive of short tones, so it sounds a little like minimal music. The Brisk Recorder Quartet Amsterdam is an excellent recorder quartet with a coherent appearance. A quartet that excels in unity. Of course, as a quartet should sound like, but Brisk sounds so obvious that it just seems that it’s not hard for them to play. But that’s what we call craftsmanship. Absolutely great music!
