Tegen een rijke Namibische achtergrond creëert zangeres Shishani een nieuwe klankwereld waar ze Afrikaanse en westerse invloeden subtiel met elkaar laat versmelten. Haar debuut-album ‘Itaala’ is een onbelemmerde cohesie waar deze kosmopolitische zangeres met drie musici een frisse en ongedwongen kijk heeft op de muziek van de toekomst.

(Alumna) Shishani (Vranckx) studeerde Culturele Antropologie en Ontwikkelingssociologie aan de Universiteit van Leiden. Een studie die haar een open blik naar de wereld bezorgde, die ze nu reflecteert in haar muziek. Ze groeit op in België tegen een Namibische achtergrond; haar moeder is Ndonga, onderdeel van de Namibische etnische bevolking Aawambo, dat haar wereldvisie nog verder verbreedt. Het repertoire op ‘Itaala‘ werd door haar geschreven in samenwerking met Sjahin During, percussionist en oprichter van The Namibian Tales. Ze zingt in het Engels, Frans en een taal uit Namibië. Bovendien gebruikt ze de hele range van haar stem waarbij ze in ‘Desert Blues’ en ‘Moodance’ haar stem laat springen van borst naar kopstem wat wij kenen als ‘jodelen’. Voeg daarbij de ongewone instrument-combinaties gitaar, cello, mbira (duimpiano), kora (West-Afrikaanse harp) en percussie (veelal kalebas) en je krijgt een fraaie muziek-melange die uniek en aangenaam global is. Zeer fraai is de cello die met zijn lange lijnen schitterend kleurt tegen het getokkel van gitaar, mbira en harp, met in ‘Ndapandula’ zelfs een knipoog naar India. Shishani & The Namibian Tales vertelt een ongebreideld muzikaal wereldverhaal dat met dit debuut-album ‘Itaala’ een voortreffelijke indruk achterlaat.

Shishani & The Namibian Tales geeft een concert op 21 oktober in de Amstelkerk tijdens de Old Roots & New Routes concertserie met bijzondere ensembles die allen gevestigd zijn in Nederland en een muziekmix presenteren met invloeden uit Oost-Europa, de Mediterranée, Afrika, het Midden- en het Verre Oosten.

Through a rich Namibian background, singer Shishani creates a new sound with African and Western influences. Together with three musicians she recorded her début album ‘Itaala’ on which this cosmopolitan singer creates a fresh and casual view to the music of the future.

(Alumna) Shishani (Vranckx) studied Cultural Anthropology at the Leiden University. A study that gave her an open mind to the world that she now reflects in her music. She grows up in Belgium into a Namibian background; her mother is Ndonga, part of the Namibian ethnic population Aawambo. The repertoire on ‘Itaala’ was written by her in collaboration with Sjahin During, percussionist and founder of The Namibian Tales. She sings in English, French and a language from Namibia. In addition, she uses the whole range of her voice and switches easily between lower and higher pitch like in ‘Desert Blues’ and ‘Moondance’ as we cnan hear in the music form Austria and Iran. The unusual instrument combinations guitar, cello, mbira (thumb piano), kora (West African harp) and percussion (mostly gourd) are marvelous. You are put into a beautiful music mix that’s unique with a lovely global feel. Very special is the cello; with its long notes that sounds brightly with the sparkling guitar, mbira and harp and in the piece ‘Ndapandula’ even a wink to Indian music. Shishani & The Namibian Tales tells an unbridled musical world story that gives you an excellent impression.
