Wie de nieuwste CD ‘Euphoria‘ van het Weense kwartet Donauwellenreiter beluisterd, wordt meegenomen in een stroom van theatraal melodische muziek. Een werkwijze die ze op dit derde album euforisch voortzetten in een bezetting van viool, cello, piano en drums/percussie met enkele vocale stukken.

De Oostenrijkse groep de Donauwellenreiter werd opgericht in 2010 en speelt over het algemeen instrumentale stukken op de rand van theatrale structuren, aangevuld met elementen uit de minimal music en popmuziek. De groep werkt weer met z’n vieren zonder gastmusici dit keer. Door het uitbouwen van kleine motiefjes doet hun muziek denken aan de werkwijze van The Penguin Café Orchestra. Een compositie-techniek die Michael Nyman ook o.a. toepaste in de jaren ’80 toen hij stukken componeerde voor de films van Peter Greenaway. Elk nummer op Donauwellenreiter’s nieuwe CD ‘Euphoria’ heeft een geheel eigen sfeer, die gecreëerd wordt door spaarzaam en origineel gebruik van instrument combinaties en fraaie arrangementen. Lange viool-tonen tegen getokkelde cello-klanken, onregelmatige maatsoorten of strakke staccato (soms onregelmatige) ritmiek op piano en drums. Opvallend zijn de thema’s, instrumentale liedjes met sterke melodieën die goed in gehoor liggen en (regelmatig) zeer filmisch aandoen. Op dit album staan ook enkele vocale stukken waarin de groep een heel ander metier laat horen die wat minder sterk is. Composities als ‘Let loose’, ‘Put your shadows together‘, ‘Rothko‘ of het titelstuk ‘Euphoria’ zijn van grote kwaliteit waarmee Donauwellenreiter het beste haalt uit de theatrale muziek van de afgelopen twintig jaar en daar solide muzikale bouwwerken mee creëert waar je niet omheen kunt!

The new album ‘Euphoria‘ of the Viennese quartet Donauwellenreiter is a wonderful CD with a lovely sound of theatrical and melodic music. On this third album their music is played on violin, cello, piano and drums / percussion with some vocal pieces.

In 2010 the Austrian group Donauwellenreiter was founded and played generally instrumental pieces on the edge of theatrical music, completed with characteristics of minimal music and pop music. Again the group is works with the four musicians, without guest musicians this time. Their composing style is reminiscent of The Penguin Cafe Orchestra by creating small motifs. A composing technique that also applied to Michael Nyman’s music, when he composed pieces for the films of Peter Greenaway in the 80s. Every song on Donauwellenreiter’s new album ‘Euphoria‘ has its own atmosphere, by original use of instrumental combinations and fine arrangements. Long violin tones compared plucked cello sounds, irregular beat or tight staccato (sometimes irregular) rhythms on piano and drums. Notable are the themes, instrumental songs with strong and lovely melodies that reminds to music for film. On this album there are also some vocal pieces in which the group sound a bit different and less strong. Pieces like ‘Let loose’, ‘Put your shadows together,’ ‘Rothko‘ or the title song ‘Euphoria’ are great and wonderful quality music in which Donauwellenreiter took the best out of the theatrical music of the last twenty years and creates a solid musical statement which cannot be ignored!
