‘Inner Movements’ is de debuut-CD van de Rotterdamse fusionband Marutyri. Net zoals de folk uit de jaren ’60 zijn ook de fusion en jazzrock bezig aan een renaissance. Deze nog jonge band, opgericht in 2014, ontdoet deze ‘oude’ muziek van zijn grondverf en schildert er een fijn dun laagje hoogglans overheen.

Wie kent ze nog de geweldige Nederlandse jazz-rock, funk en fusion formaties: Solution, Alquin, Sweet d’Buster of zelfs Focus. Het Rotterdams gezelschap Marutyri sluit aan bij deze stroming uit de jaren ’70 waar in een funk signatuur uitstapjes werden gemaakt naar jazz, rock en pop. Acht jonge enthousiaste musici doen het nog eens dunnetjes over. Zij vonden elkaar in 2011 tijdens hun studie aan het Codarts, het Conservatorium van Rotterdam. Hun ontmoeting resulteerde uiteindelijk in de oprichting van de formatie Marutyri in de herfst van 2014. De debuut-CD ‘Inner Movements’ staat vol onontbeerlijke grooves die worden gelardeerd met funky (mooi gearrangeerde) blazers-riffs, hier en daar aangedikt met volvette keyboards & Hammond orgel, aangevuld met funky Fender gitaar en sprankelende percussie. Het gebruik van analoge synthesizer geluiden (saw-tooth) geeft de groep soms een gedateerde, maar mooie nostalgische sound. De vele muzikale wendingen maken de muziek Marutyri weliswaar spannend en avontuurlijk, maar soms ook wat hectisch en onrustig. Bandleider en bassist Rik van der Ouw schreef de meeste stukken en is ook verantwoordelijk voor de warm klinkende opname. Prachtig is ‘Grump‘ met scheurende gitaarsolo tegen de strakke breaks. Zoals ook te horen in het slot van ‘Last Minute‘ waar gast-saxofonist Benjamin Herman soleert over een soort prachtige perpetuum-mobilé-break-loop die zichzelf maar blijft herhalen na de conga solo. ‘Inner Movements’ zit vol met dit soort kleine muzikuultjes die het album rijk maakt en multi luisterbaar voor nog meer innerlijke beleving.

‘Inner Movements’ is the début album of the Rotterdam (The Netherlands) based fusion band Marutyri. Like the folk from the 60s is the fusion and jazz rock working on it’s Renaissance. This young band, founded in 2014, covers this “old” music and add it with new sounds.

Can you still remember the great Dutch jazz-rock, funk and fusion bands from the ’70s like Solution, Alquin, Sweet d’Buster or Focus? The Rotterdam band Marutyri follows their funk, rock and jazz signature. In 2011, eight young enthusiastic musicians found each other during their studies at the Codarts, the Rotterdam Conservatory and started Marutyri in the fall of 2014. The début album ‘Inner Movements’ is full of indispensable grooves that are peppered with funky (beautifully arranged) brass riffs, with fine keyboards & Hammond organ, complemented with funky Fender guitar and sparkling percussion. The use of analog synthesizer sounds (saw-tooth) offers a dated, but lovely nostalgic sound. Indeed, the many musical twists make their music exciting, but sometimes a bit hectic and restless. Band leader and bassist Rik van der Ouw wrote most of the pieces and is also responsible for the recording. Magnificent is ‘Grump’ with ripping guitar solo tight tight breaks. Like at the end of ‘Last Minute’ where guest saxophonist Benjamin Herman plays a solo over a wonderful perpetuum-mobile-break-loop, which keeps repeating itself, after the conga solo. ‘Inner Movements’ is full of these tiny and lovely musical parts which makes the album rich and spread even more inner experience.
