‘Konono No 1 meets Batida‘ is een enerverende samenwerking tussen de legendarische band Konono No 1 uit Kinshasa (de hoofdstad van Congo) met de Angolees/Portugese DJ en producer Batida (Pedro Coquenao). Deze CD is het zesde album in de Congotronics serie, geïnitieerd door Crammed Discs huis-producer Vincent Kenis.

Konono No 1 wordt opgericht in 1960 door likembé virtuoos Mingiedi Mawangu. De likembé, de duimpiano, die lijkt op de stanza of de (Zimbabwaanse) mbira waarmee hij experimenteert met effecten (zoals vervorming) en versterkt via een gitaarversterker. In zijn band gebruikt hij drie varianten: de bas, medium en treble waardoor er een geweldige line-up van likembé’s ontstaat aangevuld met gitaar, percussie, megafoons en zang. Het resultaat is trancemuziek met bazomba invloeden waardoor er een Afrikaans bezwerende avant-garde rock klinkt die verbluffend, opzwepend en bovendien uniek is. Deze uitzonderlijke muziek wordt nu gemixt met de grooves en samples van producer Batida. De radio DJ Pedro Coquenao die geboren werd in Huambo (Angola) in 1974, maar opgroeide in een buitenwijk van Lissabon. Prachtig is de voortstuwende club-mix van het openingslied ‘Nlle Kalusimbiko‘, tegen de elektronische beats in ‘Yambadi mama‘ (met cross-rhythms). In ‘Kinsumba‘ worden zelfs zang-samples in een re-mix geplaatst. Geen platte mix maar inventieve uitvoeringen waar zang wordt afgewisseld met zeer ritmische passages, waarbij elektronische en akoestische percussie prachtig naadloos in elkaar zijn verweven. ‘Konono No 1 meets Batida’ werd mede geproduceerd door Vincent Kenis. Wie deze CD de moeite waard vindt, moet ook zijn vorige projecten eens beluisteren met Staff Benda Bilili en Kasai Allstars. Pure muziek!

‘Konono No 1 meets Batida’ is an exciting collaboration between the legendary band Konono No 1 from Kinshasa (the capital of Congo) with the Angolan / Portuguese DJ and producer Batida (Pedro Coquenao). This CD is the sixth album in the Congotronics series, initiated by Crammed Discs in-house producer Vincent Kenis.

Konono No 1 started in 1960 by likembé virtuoso Mingiedi Mawangu. He experimented with the likembé, thumb piano, resembling the stanza or the (Zimbabwean) mbira to put effects (such as distortion) on the sound and reinforced it through a guitar amp. In his band he used three variants: the bass, medium and treble causing a great lineup of likembé’s, supplemented with guitar, percussion, vocals and megaphones. The result is trance music with bazomba influences. In this way we hear an African avant-garde rock which is amazing, exciting and unique. This exceptional music is now mixed with the grooves and samples of producer Batida. The radio DJ Pedro Coquenao who was born in Huambo (Angola) in 1974, but grew up in the suburbs of Lisbon. Wonderful is the propulsive club mix of the opening song ‘Nlle Kalusimbiko’ and the electronic beats in ‘Yambadi mama‘ (with cross-rhythms). In the song ‘Kinsumba’ there are even vocal samples placed in a re-mix. No simple mixture but inventive music where singing is interspersed with highly rhythmic passages, where electronic and acoustic percussion are seamlessly interwoven into each other. ‘Konono No 1 meets Batida’ is co-produced by Vincent Kenis. So, whoever finds this CD worth listening, try also his previous projects like Staff Benda Bilili and Kasai Allstars. Lovely pure music!
