De Kreiz Breizh Akademi uit Bretagne werd tien jaar geleden opgericht door de fameuze Bretonse zanger Erik Marchand. Dit jubileum wordt gevierd met het nieuwe album ‘5ed Round‘ waarop twaalf musici een vlammende connectie aangaan met Bretonse folk, Oost-Europese en Oriëntaalse muziek.

Erik Marchand (foto rechts) is een held in het creëren van Bretonse cross-overs. Zo bracht hij CD’s uit met de Franse snarengigant Thierry (Titi) Robin en het Roma orkest Le Taraf de Caransebes. Hij werkte met Les Balkaniks waarmee een mix werd gemaakt van Roemeense, Servische en Bretonse muziek en op zijn album ‘Ukronia‘ klinkt een versie van Bretons met Renaissance muziek. Al zijn projecten zijn interessant en uniek. De Bretonse muziek heeft een dermate sterk en authentiek karakter dat bij elke fusie deze muziek de boventoon voert en met kop en schouders erboven uitsteekt. Dat geldt zeker voor de vocale stukken. Dat blijkt ook weer op het nieuwe, vijfde album van de Kreiz Breizh Akademi waarmee Marchand al jaren cd’s uitbrengt. Let wel: hier is hij artistiek leider en zingt dus niet mee. Twaalf jonge voortreffelijke musici spelen nieuw geschreven repertoire van verschillende componisten met adviezen van o.a. de Bretons violist Jacky Molard, de Griek Loukas Metaxas, de Noord Afrikaan Camel Zekri en Ross Daly. Kretens lyra-speler (soort viool), van oorsprong Ier, die al jaren op Kreta woont en zich ontwikkelde tot een van beste musici van zijn generatie. Een rijk gezelschap dat zorgt voor rijke muziek; gespeeld op strijkers, percussie, Bulgaarse gadulka (soort viool) en twee zangers. Geen akkoordinstrumenten en geen akkoorden, maar toonladders. Modale muziek waarbij het arrangement zich beweegt rond een toonladder, een tonaliteit, een muzikale kleur zoals dat gebeurt bij o.a. Arabische muziek. Het resultaat geeft een fantastische mix waarbij verschillende melodische lijnen de zang begeleiden. Zang die onmiskenbaar Bretons is en daarmee een groot aandeel heeft in de stijl. De Kreiz Breizh Akademi bewijst dat muzikaal geografische grenzen voorgoed verdwijnen en plaats maken voor Oriëntaals-Westerse mixtuur die zo organisch klinkt alsof die altijd al heeft bestaan!

The Kreiz Breizh Akademi from Brittany was founded ten years ago by the famous Breton singer Erik Marchand. This anniversary will be celebrated with the new album ‘5ed Round‘ where twelve musicians enter a fine connection with Breton folk, Eastern European and Oriental music.

Erik Marchand (photo left) is a hero in creating Breton crossovers. He released CDs with the French guitar player Thierry (Titi) Robin and the Roma orchestra Le Taraf de Caransebes. He worked with the band Les Balkaniks – creating a mix of Romanian, Serbian and Breton music. And on his album ‘Ukronia‘ there’s a version of Breton with Renaissance music. All his projects are interesting and unique. Breton music has such a strong and authentic character that in every fusion this music stays in the centre and give it a characteristic sound, even more in the vocal parts. This is evident on the new fifth album Kreiz Breizh Akademi. A group of musicians lead by Eric Marchand. Note that Marchand is only the artistic director now and therefore not a musician in the band. Twelve outstanding young musicians play new repertoire written for various musicians assited by the Breton violinist Jacky Molard, the Greek Loukas Metaxas, the North African Camel Zekri and Ross Daly. Cretan lyra player (kind of violin), Irishman from origin, living in Crete for many years now. He developed into one of best musicians of his generation. The Kreiz Breizh Akademi play music on strings, percussion, Bulgarian gadulka (kind of violin) and two singers. No chord instruments and no chords but only scales. Modal music in which the arrangement moves around a scale, a tonality and create a musical color like (for example) in Arabic music. The result gives a fantastic mix with different melodic lines accompany the melody and voices. Singing with an unmistakable Breton feel which keeps the Breton soul of the music. The Kreiz Breizh Akademi proves that musical geographic borders disappear and craete room for an Oriental-Western mixture, with a lovely organic sound. So natural as if it has always existed!
