Alhoewel blaasmuziek in Wenen zijn hoogtijdagen kende aan het eind 18de/begin 19de eeuw, zijn deze composities weer helemaal terug. Onlangs verschenen er twee CD’s met blaasmuziek, met composities van (zeer) bekende componisten bewerkt voor blazers. Winds Unlimited bracht hun album ‘Harmoniemusik from Mozarts Favourite Opera’s‘ uit en het Utrechts TenToon Ensemble hun gelijknamige CD ‘TenToon’.

Winds Unlimited

Bijzonder aan beide albums is dat werken die niet gecomponeerd zijn voor blazers, werden gearrangeerd voor deze bezetting. De kern van de muziek blijft in tact, maar door het gebruik van hout- en koperblazers in plaats ven een volledig orkest, krijgt de muziek een nieuw timbre, een nieuwe kleur en klinken de composities fris en helder. Het internationaal ensemble Winds Unlimited speelt op deze wijze delen uit drie bekende opera’s van Mozart; ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’, ‘La Clemenza di Tito’ en ‘Il Don Giovanni’. Kaspar Satorius (1754-1809) bewerkte deze opera’s voor blazers vlak na Mozart’s dood in 1791. Deze ‘vergeten’ manuscripten werden ontdekt in de Hessischelandes en Hochschulbibliothek in Darmstadt en nu uitgevoerd door het Winds Unlimited. Een septet dat terugkeert naar de oude traditie en speelt op kopieën van blaasinstrumenten uit de 18de en begin 19de eeuw. Prachtig hoe begeleiding en melodie in elkaar verweven zijn en één geheel vormen, met zorg en aandacht prachtig uitgevoerd. Het Winds Unlimited schittert en heeft de uitbundigheid van een orkest en de intimiteit van een kwartet. Uit elke opera spelen ze zes bewerkingen met wereldpremières uit ‘La Clemenza di Tito’ en ‘Il Don Giovanni’ dat het album ‘Harmoniemusik from Mozart’s Favourite Opera’s‘ nog unieker maakt!

TenToon Ensemble

Het TenToon Ensemble is een groep jonge musici uit Utrecht die naast (eigen) bewerkingen ook originele composities spelen voor blaasensemble met percussie. Het repertoire beweegt rond klassieke stukken van o.a Seant-Saëns, Händel, Debussy en Tsjaikovsky. Maar ook modern werk van Olthuis, Zimmerman en Giménez komt aan bod met aan het slot zelfs een bewerking van ‘Sing sing...’ van Louis Prima en Charles Trenet’s klassieker ‘Beyond the Sea‘ (La Mer). Door de gevarieerdheid van het repertoire etaleert het TenToon Ensemble een veerkrachtig vermogen om elk stuk dát te geven waar het om vraagt. Het spannende ‘Printemps…’ van Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) dat aansluit bij de Groupe des Six klinkt werkelijk voortreffelijk. Naast ‘Prelude l’apres midi…‘ van Debussy waar de fluit (net zoals in het origineel) het stuk draagt. Heel anders dan Tsjaikovsky’s ‘Notenkrakers Overture’ waar het euphonium (soort tuba) de rol van de strijkers op zich neemt. Het ensemble klinkt soms groot en meeslepend dan weer klein en intiem. Een afwisseling die door het gebruik van slagwerk nog wordt versterkt. Het TenToon Ensemble (voorheen J.O.N.G) viert met dit album hun vijfjarig bestaan. Zeker reden voor een feestje en dat maakt meteen nieuwsgierig naar het volgende album!

In Vienna brass music had its heydays in the late 18th/early 19th century. But this music is back. Recently two CDs were released with brass music, with compositions of (very) famous composers arranged for wind instruments. The international ensemble Winds Unlimited released their album ‘Favourite Harmoniemusik from Mozart’s Operas’ and the Utrecht TenToon Ensemble released their début album.

Winds Unlimited

On both albums compositions which were not composed for wind instruments, were arranged for brass. The heart of the music remains the same, but the music gets a new timbre, a new colour and the compositions sound fresh and bright. The international ensemble Winds Unlimited plays parts from three famous operas by Mozart; ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’, ‘La Clemenza di Tito’ and ‘Il Don Giovanni’. These operas were arranged for wind instruments by Kaspar sartorius (1754-1809) just after Mozart’s death in 1791. These ‘forgotten’ manuscripts were discovered in the Hessischelandes and Hochschulbibliothek in Darmstadt and now performed by the Winds Unlimited. A septet which returns to the old tradition and plays on copies of instruments from the 18th and early 19th century. How wonderful accompaniment and melody are woven into each other, beautifully performed with care and attention. The Winds Unlimited shines with the enthusiasm of an orchestra and the intimacy of quartet. From each opera they play six arrangements with world premières of ‘La Clemenza di Tito’ and ‘Il Don Giovanni’. This makes the album ‘Concert Music from Mozart’s Favourite Operas’ even more unique!

TenToon Ensemble

The TenToon Ensemble is a group of young musicians from Utrecht (central Netherlands) who play original compositions and arranged pieces for wind instrument and percussion. They play classical repertoire like work from Seant-Saëns, Handel, Debussy and Tchaikovsky. But also modern compositions by Olthuis, Zimmerman and Giménez. At the end of the album there’s even a version of ‘Sing sing …‘ by Louis Prima and Charles Trenet’s classic ‘Beyond the Sea’ (La Mer). With the variety of the repertoire the ensemble shows a wonderful capacity of their musical power. The exciting ‘Printemps …‘ by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) (like the Groupe des Six) sounds really exquisite. Besides ‘Prelude l’apres midi …’ composed by Debussy where the flute (like in the original) is the main instrument. Very different from Tchaikovsky’s ‘Nutcrackers Overture’ where the euphonium (kind of tuba) replaces wonderful the part of the strings. The TenToon Ensemble sounds big with a broad power but also lovely small and intimate. A variety which which is enhanced by the use of percussion. The TenToon Ensemble (formerly J.O.N.G) celebrates with this album their fifth anniversary. Certainly cause for celebration, and that makes curious for their next album!
