Tegen een schitterend Grieks decor presenteert de jonge muzikant Pantelis Spyrou zijn debuut-CD ‘Daimon Eaytos‘. Autodidact, geboren in 1976 in Thessaloniki die een innerlijke muzikale zoektocht laat horen waarbij hij Griekse muziek mengt met Westerse. Gezongen werk, sober en bevlogen composities waarbij de tzouras (soort kleine bouzouki) centraal staat.

Alhoewel in de biografie van Pantelis Spyrou wordt vermeld dat hij de muziek nooit zo serieus heeft genomen, klinkt zijn CD ‘Daimon Eaytos‘ uiterst vakkundig en gedreven. Als autodidact speelt hij vanaf zijn zestiende in diverse rockbandjes en ontwikkelt zich tot een uitstekend muzikant. In 2015 start hij een crowdfunding voor het bekostigen van zijn album en neemt met de jonge musici Kostas Tzanampetis, Tolis Niras, Dimitris Vasiliadis, Alexis Dalamitras en Giorgos Georgopoulos zijn debuut op. Pantelis Spyrou speelt naast tzouras ook gitaar, baglama en percussie en wordt bijgestaan op bouzouki, basgitaar, kanun en luit. Veel snaarinstrumenten dus, aangevuld met percussie. Het resultaat is een stralend gemêleerd Grieks album met werkelijk schitterende melodieën vol weemoed en passie. Ze worden gezongen door Kostas Tzanampetisen en de zangeressen Alexandra Ntalarizou en Ioanna Doglaridou. ‘Daimon Eaytos’ is een bijna religieus album waarin Spyrou de invloed bestudeert van de ziel op het lichaam: je zelfbeeld, het contact met anderen en de weerslag daarvan op jezelf. Dat deze zoektocht oprecht is, hoor je terug in zijn muziek die in een boog van loyaliteit buitengewoon mooi wordt gespeeld. Waar stemmen rijk worden versierd en elkaar kleuren in meerstemmigheid. Ongeacht of je de Griekse taal machtig bent, dit debuut van Pantelis Spyrou is zo ijzersterk, dat ik nu al benieuwd ben naar de opvolger!

The young Greek musician Pantelis Spyrou presents his début album ‘Daimon Eaytos‘. He’s a self-taught musician, born in 1976 in Thessaloniki who mixes Greek music with Western. Sober and passionate compositions with the tzouras (kind of small bouzouki) in the centre.

Although in the biography it’s said that Pantelis Spyrou has never taken his music so seriously, his CD ‘Daimon Eaytos‘ sounds highly skilled and passionate. In his teens he played in several rock bands and developed himself into an excellent musician. In 2015 he started a crowdfunding to fund his album and recorded with the young musicians Kostas Tzanampetis, Tolis Niras, Dimitris Vasiliadis, Alexis Dalamitras and Giorgos Georgopoulos his début. Pantelis Spyrou plays alongside tzouras also guitar, percussion and baglama and is assisted on bouzouki, bass, kanun and lute. So many stringed instruments, supplemented with percussion. The result is a shining mixed Greek album with really beautiful melodies full of melancholy and passion. They are sung by Kostas Tzanampetisen and the vocalists Alexandra Ntalarizou and Ioanna Doglaridou. ‘Daimon Eaytos’ is an almost religious album on which Spyrou trys to find out the influence of the soul on the body: your self-esteem, contact with other people and the impact on yourself. This quest is sincere, as you can easily hear in his music, played extraordinarily beautiful. Where voices are richly decorated by the lovely string instruments colouring the harmonic voices. Whether you understand the Greek language or not, Pantelis Spyrou’s début is a splendid record; I’m already looking forward to his next one!
