In een ongewone bezetting van cornet, klarinet, ûd (Arabische luit), stem en drums zet de Belgische gitarist Emmanuel Baily een prachtige escapade neer op ‘Night Stork’. Zijn debuutalbum blinkt uit in een kleurschakering zoals je die maar zelden tegenkomt op één CD. Alle muzikale windrichtingen laten je haren wapperen en je oren suizen in een vermakelijk palet!

Emmanuel Baily is een lyrisch gitarist die met verschillende akoestische en elektrische gitaren de diversiteit van het instrument laat horen. Deze van origine klassiek geschoolde Luikse musicus speelt met fraaie instrumentcombinaties waar we naast klassieke raakvlakken ook Arabisch, folk, pop en eigentijdse jazz horen en zelfs de miroloi klarinet in ‘East Coast West Coast‘. Deze ‘huilende’ klarinet komen we tegen in de klaagzangen van Grieks Macedonië en Albanië, hier prachtig gespeeld door jazzklarinettist Jean-François Foliez. Naast veel eigen werk speelt Emmanuel Baily met vier muzikanten ook een bewerking van ‘Aria‘ van J.S. Bach en een sobere, maar schitterende uitvoering van ‘Letter from Home’ van Pat Metheny. Bijzonder authentiek is het overbekende ‘Les Feulles Mortes’ (Autumn Leaves) dat niet alleen prachtig wordt uitgevoerd maar ook nog eens verdomd mooi is gearrangeerd tot een wervelende muzikale zeefdruk. Baily omringt zich met voortreffelijke musici. Zo treffen we in zijn band, naast Jean-François Foliez, de klassiek geschoolde cornet-speler Lambert Colson, drummer Xavier Rogé (Ibrahim Maalouf) en de Syrische ûd-speler Khaled Aljaramani die ook het lied ‘Sahel al Mumtanah’ zingt op een gedicht van de sufi-dichter Busiri (13de eeuw). Het enige gezongen stuk op ‘Night Stork’. Een album dat, net als je denkt dat je de muziek kent, er toch weer verrassingen komen bovendrijven en je je blijft verbazen over de scherpzinnigheid van deze muziek!

In an unusual instrument combination of cornet, clarinet, ud (Arabic lute), voice and drums the Belgian guitarist Emmanuel Baily creates a wonderful music on ‘Night Stork‘. Emmanuel Baily is a lyrical guitarist who shows the diversity of different acoustic and electric guitars. This classical trained musician comes from Liège (Belgium). With beautiful instrument combinations he combines a classical mood alongside traditional Arabic music, folk, pop and contemporary jazz. Very special is the Miroloi clarinet in ‘East Coast West Coast’. This ‘howling‘ clarinet is to be found in the lamentations of Greek Macedonia and Albania, beautiful played by jazz clarinet player Jean-François Foliez. Emmanuel Baily plays his own compositions. But on ‘Night Stork’ there’s also an adaptation of ‘Aria‘ written by J.S. Bach and a splendid performance of ‘Letter from Home’ (Pat Metheny). Particularly authentic is the piece ‘Les Feulles Mortes (Autumn Leaves)‘. Not only performed superbly but is also beautiful arranged like a swirling musical screen print. Baily is assisted by excellent musicians. Alongside Jean-François Foliez, there’s the classically trained cornet player Lambert Colson, drummer Xavier Rogé (Ibrahim Maalouf) and the Syrian oud player Khaled Aljaramani, who also sings ‘Sahel already Mumtanah’, a poem by Sufi poet Busiri (13th century). The only vocal piece on ‘Night Stork‘. An album with great musical surprises, even after a few times listening you’ll still be surprised!
