Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei is al jarenlang het toonaangevend a-capella kwintet uit Sardinië. Ook op hun nieuwste CD ‘Novaera’ zingt de groep sacrale (Cuncordu) en profane (Tenore) muziek uit dit Italiaanse eiland (Orosei). Op unieke wijze, met gebruik van de keelstem, zingt Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei deze eeuwenoude liederen.

De zangtechniek van Sardinië is uniek en vinden we alleen in Azië (Mongolië), bij de Ainu bevolking van Japan, de Inuit uit Alaska en Canada en bij de Saami uit Noord Scandinavië. Een techniek waarbij de stemkleur vanuit de keel wordt opgezet en breed en gedragen klinkt. In de Sardinische muziek veelal gebruikt in de profane (tenore) muziek, met voor- en nazang. Melodieën worden meerstemmig gezongen en verdeeld over drie partijen: de contra, bassu en mesuvoche. De sacrale (religieuze) muziek daarentegen zijn de hymnen waarbij de stemmen verticaal zijn geharmoniseerd. D.w.z.: alle stemmen zingen hetzelfde ritme zoals wij dat kennen in de muziek van bijvoorbeeld Bach, aangevuld met prachtig schrijnende akkoorden die de religieuze gebeurtenis (zoals Pasen, Avé Maria of de Heilige Madonna) kracht bijzetten. Deze ‘cumcordos’ (cuncordu) zijn ontstaan in de 17de en 18de eeuw, de tijd dat Sardinië Spaans grondgebied was. Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei werd opgericht in 1978 en deed onderzoek naar deze bijzondere muziek. Bovendien werkte de groep samen met uiteenlopende artiesten zoals de Afrikaanse zanger Mola Sylla,  zangeres Elena Ledda, accordeonist Luciano Biondini en de Vietnamese gitarist Nguyen Lê.

‘Novaera’ is het negende album waarop we het kwintet horen in 19 bijzonder fraaie sacrale (Cuncordu) en profane (Tenore) composities. Eeuwenoude stukken worden zo gezongen dat het verleden op zeer natuurlijke wijze tot leven komt, zonder enige vorm van muzikaal archaïsme. Vijf stemmen die klinken als één geheel waarbij de onderlinge stemmen nauwelijks van elkaar zijn te onderscheiden. De hele CD is a-capella op de laatste twee stukken na, waar Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei wordt bijgestaan door respectievelijk trompettist Paolo Fresu in ‘Voche’e notte’ en de Nederlandse cellist Ernst Reiziger in het slotstuk. Door rust, intensiteit en toewijding wordt ‘Novaera’ bijna een ‘Nieuw Tijdperk’ waarin deze eeuwige muziek tijdloos klinkt!

For years Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei is the leading a cappella quintet from Sardinia. Also on their latest album ‘Novaera‘ the group sings the sacred (Cuncordu) and profane (Tenore) music from this Italian island (Orosei). In a unique way, using the throat voice, Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei sings these ancient songs.

The vocal technique from Sardinia is unique and is only to be found in Asia (Mongolia), the Ainu people of Japan, the Inuit of Alaska and Canada and the Saami of northern Scandinavia. A way of singing in which the voice colour is set up from the throat and sounds wide and broad. Often used in the Sardinian profane (tenore) music, with call-and-respond singing. Melodies are sung polyphonic by the the contra, bassu and mesuvoche. The sacred (religious) music, however, are the hymns which are harmonized vertically. This means: all the voices sing the same rhythm, as to be found in the music of Bach for example, complemented by beautifully harmonies who express the religious events such as Easter, Avé Maria or the Holy Madonna. These cumcordos (cuncordu) were developed in the 17th and 18th century, the time when Sardinia was Spanish territory. Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei was founded in 1978 and has researched this extraordinary music. Moreover, the group has collaborated with artists from different backgrounds such as the African singer Mola Sylla, singer Elena Ledda, accordionist Luciano Biondini and the Vietnamese guitarist Nguyen Lê.

‘Novaera’ is the ninth album. A wonderful record with 19 very beautiful sacral (Cuncordu) and profane (Tenore) compositions. Ancient pieces are sung in a very natural way, without any form of musical archaism. Five voices that sound like óne unity, like óne musical colour. The whole album is sung acapela except the last two pieces in which Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei is assisted by trumpeter Paolo Fresu in ‘Voche’e notte‘ and the Dutch cellist Ernst Reiziger in the last piece. The silence, intensity and dedication transform ‘Novaera‘ almost into a ‘New Era’ in which this eternal music becomes timeless!
