Het komt wel vaker voor dat CD’s later in Nederland te verkrijgbaar zijn dan in het land van herkomst. Het tweede album ‘Let me tell you’ van het Bulgaarse gadulka/gitaar-duo Hristina Beleva & Petar Milanov kwam uit in maart 2014 in Bulgarije, maar is sinds kort pas in ons land te krijgen. Dit album is de opvolger van hun fantastisch debuut ‘On Focus‘ uit 2012.

Als ik op reis ga, neem ik altijd een radio mee waar ik mee kan opnemen. Steeds op zoek naar nieuwe, bijzondere muziek. Zo ook tijdens mijn reis door het wonderschone Bulgarije in de zomer van 2012. De Bulgaarse radio draaide een paar nummers van het gadulka/gitaar-duo Hristina Beleva & Petar Milanov die ook live in de studio aanwezig waren. Eenmaal terug in Nederland zocht ik contact met ze en recenseerde hun inspirerende CD ‘On Focus’. Nu is daar de opvolger ‘Let me tell you’. Een album dat aansluit bij hun debuut. Ook weer die fraaie gadulka/gitaar combinatie, waarbij de gadulka de duidelijke verwijzing is naar de Bulgaarse (volks)muziek. Een strijkinstrument dat rechtop wordt bespeeld en waar de snaren niet worden ingedrukt maar aangeraakt. Hierdoor verandert de toonhoogte en bovendien klinken er resonantiesnaren mee die nog meer kleur geven aan dit bijzondere instrument. De typische Bulgaarse maatverdeling (7-tels) en de karakteristieke melodie-versieringen vinden we allemaal terug op dit prachtige album waarbij de gitaar de cross-over maakt met funky thema’s en strakke suggestieve begeleidingen. Er wordt gesoleerd op gadulka en gitaar: waarbij de gitaar met zichzelf is gedubbeld en in ‘Vutsi Mi Viat‘ aangevuld met tambura: een soort grote mandoline. Dit tweede album is volledig instrumentaal, op twee traditionele stukken na, die bekoorlijk worden gezongen door Hristina Beleva. ‘Let me tell you‘ is een van de mooiste Bulgaarse cross-over CD’s die prachtig vanuit een muzikaal Bulgaarse omgeving heel West-Europa bestrijkt.

It is not uncommon for CDs to be available later in the Netherlands than in the country of origin. The second album ‘Let me tell you’ from the Bulgarian gadulka/guitar duo Hristina Beleva & Petar Milanov came out in March 2014 in Bulgaria and it’s the follow up to their fantastic début album ‘On Focus‘ from 2012.

Whenever I travel, I always take my radio with me to record national radio programms. Constantly looking for new, interesting music. Also during my trip through the beautiful Bulgaria in the summer of 2012. The Bulgarian radio played a few songs from the gadulka/guitar duo Hristina Beleva & Petar Milanov who were also live present in the studio. When I retruned in the Netherlands, I contacted them and made a review of their inspiring album CD ‘On Focus’. Now there is the successor ‘Let me tell you‘. An album with the same magic as their début. Again the beautiful guitar/gadulka combination, where the gadulka fits to a clear reference to Bulgarian (folk) music. A string instrument that is played upright and where the strings are not pressed but touched. This changes the pitch and in addition, resonance strings will vibrate which give this particular instrument a broader sound. The typical Bulgarian beat (in 7) and the characteristic melodic ornaments is to be found on this beautiful album where the guitar makes the crossover with funky themes and tight evocative accompaniments. There are solo’s on guitar and gadulka: where the guitar itself is doubled and the tambura (a kind of large mandolin) is added in the tune ‘Vutsi Mi Viat‘. This second album is completely instrumental, though two traditional pieces are wonderful sung by Hristina Beleva. ‘Let me tell you‘ is one of the most beautiful Bulgarian crossover CDs I heard lately. In a wonderful musical Bulgarian environment it spreads all of over Western Europe.
