‘The Johannesburg Sessions‘ is de derde cd (in een nog te verschijnen serie van tien) die de Nederlandse jazzpianist Mike del Ferro opnam voor Challenge Records. Een serie waarin hij zich laat inspireren door musici uit landen waar hij in het verleden optrad. Op ‘The Johannesburg Sessions‘ horen we o.a. de Zuid-Afrikaanse zanger Mbuso Khoza en bassist Carlo Mombelli.

Mike del Ferro is een gevierd Nederlands pianist. Studeerde aanvankelijk klassiek piano maar switchte in zijn tienerjaren naar de jazz en studeerde Cum Laude af aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Del Ferro is een muzikaal innovator, steeds op zoek naar nieuwe muzikale combinaties. Maakte o.a opnames met de Franse accordeonist Richard Galliano, de legendarische musicus Toots Thielemans, het Gustav Klimt Stringquartet en zelfs een opname met zijn in 1992 overleden vader, operazanger Leonardo del Ferro, van de aria ‘Tu che di gel sei cinta’ (uit de opera ‘Turandot’ van Puccini) op zijn album ‘Mike del Ferro Plays Belcanto’.

Del Ferro reisde de wereld over, gaf concerten in meer dan honderd landen en speelde met diverse musici die hem nu inspireren voor zijn 10-delige cd-serie ‘Songs inspired by wandering the Globe’. Voor het derde deel ‘The Johannesburg Sessions’ reisde hij af naar Zuid-Afrika en ontmoette zanger Mbuso Khoza, drummer Kesivan Naidoo, basgitarist/composer Carlo Mombelli en percussionist Thebe Lipere. Het resultaat is een meeslepend album met aandachtige muziek. Del Ferro is een subtiel en fijnzinnig pianist en een inspirerend begeleider die nauwkeurig zijn akkoorden kiest – schitterend in de gezongen traditionele lullaby ‘Umlolozelo‘. Bijzonder zijn de akkoord-omkeringen, waar de basnoot niet de grondtoon van de harmonie is, waardoor de muziek een prachtig sensitieve lading krijgt (‘Buzzycle’). Fraai zijn het verhalende openingsstuk ‘Smomomdiya‘, het sequens-thema in ‘Goema on Saterday‘ met heerlijk Cape-Town ritme en de open sfeer in ‘Ibusise’; een danklied voor God. Op ‘The Johannesburg Sessions’ staan naast werken van Del Ferro ook stukken van bassist Mombelli en een lied van zanger Mbuso Khoza die in het Zulu zingt; de taal met de ‘clicks‘. Mike del Ferro behoudt in elk stuk de kern van de Zuid-Afrikaanse muziek en creëert daarnaast een nieuw spectrum waar zowel de jazz- als de Afrikaanse muziekliefhebber zich behaaglijk bij voelt. ‘The Johannesburg Sessions’ is the third album (in an upcoming series of ten) which the Dutch jazz pianist Mike del Ferro recorded for Challenge Records. A series in which he’s inspired by musicians from countries where he performed in the past. On ‘The Johannesburg Sessions’ we hear among others, the South African singer Mbuso Khoza and bassist Carlo Mombelli.

Mike del Ferro is a renowned Dutch pianist. Initially studied classical piano but switched in his teens to jazz and graduated with honors from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Del Ferro is a musical innovator, always searching for new musical combinations. Recorded music with the French accordionist Richard Galliano, the legendary musician Toots Thielemans, the Gustav Klimt String Quartet and even recorded with his deceased father, opera singer Leonardo del Ferro (1921-1992), the aria ‘Tu che di gel sei cinta‘ (from the opera ‘Turandot‘ by Puccini) on his album ‘Mike del Ferro Plays Belcanto’.

Del Ferro traveled around the world, giving concerts in over a hundred countries and played with various musicians who now inspire him for his 10-part CD series ‘Songs inspired by wandering the Globe’. For part three ‘The Johannesburg Sessions’, he traveled to South Africa and met singer Mbuso Khoza, drummer Kesivan Naidoo, bassist / composer Carlo Mombelli and percussionist Thebe Lipere. The result is a compelling album with attentive music. Del Ferro is a subtle and delicate pianist and an inspiring mentor who accurately chooses his chords and harmonies – resplendent in the traditional lullaby ‘Umlolozelo’. Particularly noteworthy are the chord inversions, where the bass note is not the root note of the harmony, giving the music a wonderful and sensitive flavour (‘Buzzycle‘). Beautiful are the opening song ‘Smomomdiya‘, the sequence theme in ‘Goema on Saterday‘ with lovely Cape-Town rhythm and the open atmosphere in ‘Ibusise‘; a thanksgiving to God. A few pieces on ‘The Johannesburg Sessions’ were written by Del Ferro, bassist Mombelli and one song by singer Mbuso Khoza who sings in Zulu; the ‘click‘ language. Mike del Ferro keeps the heart of the South African music and creates a new spectrum where both the jazz and African music lovers will feel comfortable with. Wonderful album!
