De van oorsprong Servische altvioliste en zangeres Jelena Popržan woont al jaren in Wenen. Met haar muziekprojecten zoekt ze steeds de randen op. Het duo Catch-Pop String-Strong met celliste Rina Kacinari of het trio Sormeh: met twee Iraanse musici. Haar nieuwste groep heet Madame Baheux. Verrassende muziek; met humor, toegankelijk, origineel en opwindend ritmisch.

Madame Baheux is een van de meest opvallende groepen van de laatste tijd. Krachtige muziek, ritmische energie, verdraaid strak gespeeld in een doorlopend perpetuum mobile van vitaliteit en levenslust. Een muzikale wervelwind met theatrale uitstraling waar de muziek overwegend Balkan georiënteerd is, aangevuld met pop, rock, klassiek en wereld-improvisatie. Altvioliste Jelena Popržan is het boegbeeld van Madame Baheux. Ze heeft ferme viool techniek. Ze laat haar instrument ronken, schuren, janken en zingen. Bovendien heeft ze een krachtige en geloofwaardige stem (Magna padnala v dolina) en zingt ze twee stukken in het Oostenrijks, een in het Engels en ‘Gusarka Jenny‘ (‘Seerauber Jenny’ van B. Brecht/K. Weill) in het Servisch-Kroatisch. De groep bestaat naast Popržan uit de Bosnische gitariste & accordeoniste Ljubinka Jokic. Zij speelt stevig in ‘Dimitrijo, sine Mitre’ en ‘Banacansko Song’ met prachtige voorhouding in de ‘brug’ (zie youtube). Verder horen we de celliste Dee Linde, de Oostenrijkse contrabassiste Lina Neuner  en de Bulgaarse drumster Maria Petrova: heerlijk polyritmisch in het openingslied ‘Es war einmal Čoček’. Madame Beheux is een eigenzinnig kwartet met een steekhoudend muzikaal verhaal. Geen wonder dat ze in december 2014 de Austrian World Music Awards hebben gewonnen; ‘wereldberoemd’ in Oostenrijk – nu de rest van Europa!

The Serbian born violist and singer Jelena Popržan lives in Vienna for years. With her different projects she innovates her music; like the duo Catch-Pop String-Strong with cellist Rina Kacinari or trio Sormeh with two Iranian musicians. Her latest group Madame Baheux just recorded their début album. Surprising music; with humor, accessible, original and exciting rhythmic.

Madame Baheux is one of the most notable groups of the last time. Powerful music, rhythmic energy, twisted and tightly played in an ongoing perpetual motion of vitality. A musical whirlwind in a theatrical atmosphere where the music is predominantly oriented Balkan supplemented with pop, rock, classical and world music improvisation. Violist Jelena Popržan is the figurehead of Madame Baheux. She has firm violin technique. She’s a talented musician who makes her violin sing, weep, scrub and snore. Moreover, she has a strong and wonderful voice (‘Magna padnala v Dolina’) and sing two pieces in the Austrian, one in English and ‘Gusarka Jenny‘ (‘Seerauber Jenny’ B. Brecht / K. Weill) in Serbian-Croatian. The group comprises Popržan from the Bosnian guitarist and accordionist Ljubinka Jokic. She plays firmly ‘Dimitrijo, sine Mitre’ and ‘Banacansko Song‘ with wonderful voicing in the ‘bridge‘ (see youtube). Furthermore, we hear the cellist Dee Linde, the Austrian double bass player Lina Neuner and the Bulgarian drummer Maria Petrova: delicious polyrhythmic in the opening song ‘Es war einmal Čoček’. Madame Beheux is a quirky quartet with a valid musical story. No wonder they won the Austrian World Music Awards in December 2014; ‘world famous‘ in Austria – up to the rest of Europe!
