Het Franse kwartet Zakouska dat uit twee violen, gitaar en accordeon bestaat, slaat met hun tweede album ‘à Dos de Géants’ een deuk in het wereldmuziekrepertoire. Muziek met een hoog roma, hot-club-de-France (manouche) en klezmer gehalte. Geestdriftig, virtuoos en met esprit gespeeld, aangevuld met een royale dosis humor. Rokende tzigane-turbofolk!

De muziek van Zakouska beweegt vrijelijk door de Karpaten. Een hoogvliegende Tsjechisch, Pools, Slowaaks, Oekraïens, Roemeens, Duits, Servisch en Hongaarse mix. Elodie Messmer en Aline Haelberg spelen respectievelijk viool en altviool en zingen hier en daar fonetisch. Fabien Bucher speelt (fretloze) gitaar en percussie en Arthur Bacon accordeon. De groep wordt in 2008 opgericht door vier klassiek geschoolde musici die tegenwoordig werken vanuit Straatsburg. Vastberaden, zelfverzekerde en voortreffelijk ritmische muziek, met nauwelijks percussie. Veel improvisatie met opmerkelijk gitaarspel dat beweegt op de rand van manouche terwijl de accordeon overwegend het Bulgaars-Roemeense idioom uitvoert. Nergens is de muziek stijlvast en worden veelvuldig cross-overs toegepast waardoor de muziek soms per maat van stijl veranderd. Onberispelijke instrumentbeheersing waarbij het vakmanschap zich ontplooid tot een rijk scala aan tempo en timbre wisselingen die de Oost-Europese muziek laat beuken, huilen, zagen, lachen met hier en daar een humoristische knipoog. ‘à Dos de Géants’ (Op de Rug van de Reus) klinkt zo vanzelfsprekend dat je bijna vergeet hoe knap de composities in elkaar zitten en hoe talentvol deze musici zijn. Een exceptioneel kwartet zoals je maar zelden tegenkomt!

French quartet Zakouska is one of the finest quartets of their kind. Two violins, guitar and accordion play wonderful world music on their second album ‘à Dos de Geants’. Music with a high roma, Hot Club de France (manouche) and klezmer content. Exciting, virtuoso complemented with a generous dose of humor. Smoking tzigane turbo-folk!

The music of Zakouska moves freely through the Carpathians. A high-flying Czech, Polish, Slovak, Ukrainian, Romanian, German, Serbian and Hungarian mix. Elodie Messmer and Aline Haelberg respectively play violin and viola and sing sometimes phonetically. Fabien Bucher plays (fretless) guitar and percussion and the accordion is played by Arthur Bacon. The group was founded in 2008 by four classically trained musicians, based at Strasbourg. Determined, confident and exquisite rhythmic music, with hardly any percussion. Many improvisation with remarkable guitar playing that moves on the edge of manouche while the accordion performs predominantly Bulgarian-Romanian idiom. Nowhere the music is played in one style and frequently crossovers are added in between the beats. Impeccable musicianship which the workmanship is deployed to a rich array of tempo and timbre changes that makes the Eastern European music thump, cry, saws and laugh with sometimes a humorous nod. ‘à Dos the Giants’ (On the Back of the Giant) sounds so natural that you almost forget how clever compositions are put together and how talented these musicians are. An exceptional quartet as you rarely encounter!
