Multi-instrumentalist Jaume Compte uit Catalonië (Spanje) bracht met zijn Nafas Ensemble de cd ‘Tariq’ (Arabisch voor ‘weg‘) uit in 2011. Dat is zijn derde album sinds 2001, die dit jaar (2014) opnieuw is uitgebracht. Originele, nieuw gecomponeerde muziek die danst op de rand van Zuid-Europese, Mediterrane en Oriëntaalse folk.

‘Tariq’ bevat een amalgama van West-Europese (folk) en Arabische muziek die vrolijk gedijt over melancholische thema’s. In een mooi contrast klinken opgetogen stukken tegen een weemoedige achtergrond. Hierdoor wordt de muziek kamerbreed en volgen melancholie en vreugde elkaar moeiteloos op. Oriëntaalse instrumenten, zoals de Arabische luit, riq (tamboerijn) en darbouka (trommel) werken in combinatie met gitaar, accordeon en strijkers (viool, cello en contrabas) assimilerend. En alhoewel thema’s en melodieën zeer herkenbaar zijn en soms zelfs voor de hand liggen, zijn het vooral de arrangementen van dit kwintet die de muziek zo speciaal maakt. De prachtige combinaties en de daardoor ongebruikelijke muzikale kleuren maken het speels en avontuurlijk met hier en daar polyfone frases. Overwegend instrumentaal met drie vocale stukken: ‘Espiral’ prachtig gezongen door Francisco Albéniz die het ook componeerde. De ingetogen stem van Marcel Cranc en zangeres Silvia Pérez Cruz die in ‘Absència‘ een Sefardische kleurnuance schildert. ‘Tariq’ is dus een heruitgave en dat is maar goed ook. En voor degene die de cd destijds gemist heeft, is dit een herkansing. Dit album mag niet ongehoord voorbij gaan, want daar is die te mooi voor!

Multi-instrumentalist Jaume Compte from Catalonia (Spain) presented with his Nafas Ensemble CD ‘Tariq‘ (Arabic for ‘Road‘) in 2011. His third album since 2001, this year (2014) it was re-released. Original, newly composed music dancing on the edge of southern European, Mediterranean and Oriental folk.

‘Tariq‘ contains an amalgam of Western European (folk) and Arabic music that thrives on cheerful themes. In a nice contrast modest pieces sound great with a melancholy background. This makes the music broad with a lovely twist between melancholy and joy. Oriental instruments, such as the Arabic lute, riq (tambourine) and darbouka (drum) together with guitar, accordion and strings (violin, cello and double bass) works out very exceptional. And although themes and melodies are distinct and sometimes even obvious, it is mainly the arrangements of this quintet that makes the music so special. The beautiful combinations and therefore unusual musical colors make it playful and adventurous with some polyphonic phrases. Mostly the music is instrumental with three vocal pieces: ‘Espiral‘ sung by Francisco Albéniz who also wrote this piece. The mellow voice of Marcel Cranc and singer Silvia Perez Cruz paints a Sephardic color nuance in ‘Absència‘. ‘Tariq’ is a re-release, and that’s a good thing. For those who missed the CD, this is your second chance. This album should not go unheard because there’s too good for that!
