She’Koyokh uit Londen speelt aanstekelijke Klezmer & Balkan muziek. Het octet bestaat uit Engelse, Amerikaanse, Griekse, Servische en Turkse musici. Op hun derde cd ‘Wild Goats & Unmarried Women‘ speelt de groep een fraaie collectie songs uit Turkije, Oost- en Zuid-Europa: zowel vocaal als instrumentaal.

She’Koyokh wordt opgericht in 2001 en start aanvankelijk als straatorkest. Het muzikaal balletje gaat pas echt rollen als de groep in 2008 besluit voor een bredere repertoire keuze en de Turkse zangeres Cigdem Aslan uit Istanboel de groep versterkt. Zij heeft een prachtige stem, soms wat onzeker maar het is juist die verlegenheid die haar stem innemend maakt. De muziek wordt strak gespeeld: de onregelmatig ritmen uit Bulgarije, de klezmer, de sevdahlinka uit Bosnië, de Grieks en Turkse muziek. Steeds raakt de groep de kern van elke stijl. Bijzonder is het snarenspel van gitarist Matt Bacon, de rollende accordeon van Zivorad Nikolic en de huilende klarinet van Susi Evans. Op het cd-hoesje van ‘Wild Goats & Unmarried Women‘ wordt de She’Koyokh (door muziektijdschrift Songlines) tot ‘de beste Klezmer & Balkan Band van Engeland‘ geëerd. Dat lijkt me wat overdreven. Soms is de muziek zelfs wat braaf en mag deze best wat meer uit bocht vliegen, maar de moeite waard is het zeker!

She’Koyokh from London plays catching Klezmer & Balkan music. The octet consits of English, American, Greek, Serbian and Turkish musicians. On their thirth album ‘Wild Goats & Unmarried Women‘ we hear a fine vocal and instrumental collection of songs from Turkey, East and South Europa.

She’Koyokh was establishd in 2001 as a street orchestra. The group got really successful when they started to play a more extensive repertoire and the Turkish singer Cigdem Aslan from Istanbul joined the group. She has a wonderful voice, a bit unstable, but very sympathetic. The music is played tight: the irregular rhythms from Bulgaria, klezmer, the sevdahlinka (love songs) form Bosnia, The Greek and Turkish music. With every style the group touches the heart of the music. Beautiful is the guitar playing of Matt Bacon, the gliding accodion of Zivorad Nikolic and the lovely crying clarinet of Susi Evans. On the cover of ‘Wild Goats & Unmarried Women‘ She’Koyokh is nominated as ’the best Klezmer & Balkan Band from England‘. That’s a little effusive. The music is sometimes gallant and from time to time a few sharp notes would have been great. But still it’s wonderful music, worth listening!
