Muziek uit de Renaissance en (Vroeg) Barok is voor veel jazz musici een inspiratie bron. Muziek met een heldere structuur die veel improvisatie mogelijkheden biedt. Dat geldt ook voor het kwintet Music 4 a While van pianist Johan Dupont (Luik 1984). In een jazz kamermuziek bezetting klinkt voortreffelijke muziek van West-Europese componisten.

Music 4 a While is de groep rond de frisse pianist Johan Dupont die opvalt met zijn licht betoverend touché, dat bijzonder goed past bij oude muziek. Hij bespeelt het klavier veelal in het hoge register waardoor de muziek sprankelend blijft, net zoals het origineel. Diezelfde aanpak gebruikt hij in de prachtige arrangementen waarbij de contrabas, klarinet, viool (heerlijke Roma kleur in ‘Sogna fiore mio‘) en enkele gastmusici opmerkelijk fraai zijn gearrangeerd tot weldadige muziek. In een open en heldere klank varieert hij met maatwisselingen, omspelingen, verschillende instrumentcombinaties en is er veel ruimte improvisatie met zelfs een knipoog naar popmuziek. Alle composities zijn originele stukken van o.a. Dowland, Monteverdi en Purcell en worden gezongen door Muriel Bruno. Een mooie heldere stem met (helaas) soms net iets teveel vibrato en sforzato’s waardoor het af en toe wat geforceerd overkomt. De melodieën blijven dicht bij het origineel en worden gezongen in het Engels, Italiaans en Frans. Music 4 a While is een zeer geslaagd album waarbij oude muziek wordt vertaald naar het heden en met gemak ‘Music 4 always’ van gemaakt kan worden.

Music from the Renaissance and the (Early) Baroque is an inspiration for jazz musicians. Music with a clear structure for a lot of improvisation possibilities. Like the music of Music 4 a While of piano player Johan Dupont (Liège 1984). In a chamber jazz combination they play great music form West-European composers.

Music 4 a While is the group of the wonderful pianist Johan Dupont, who’s striking because of his lovely touché that is exicting for old music. He mostly play in high register which makes the music sparkle, like the original. Dupont wrote wonderful refreshing arrangements for double bass, clarinet, violin (lovely Roma touch in ‘Sogna fiore mio‘) and some guest musicians. In an open and clear sound he variates in beats, different melodies and instrument combinations with a lot of improvising and even an eye wink to pop music. All the compositions are originals of Dowland, Monteverdi en Purcell, to name a few and sung by Muriel Bruno. A beautiful voice but (unfortunate) sometimes to much vibrato or sforzato, which makes her sound a little forced. The melodies stay close to the original and are sung in English, Italian and French. Music 4 a While is a very successful project that translates old music to the present time and easily can be translated to ‘Music 4 always‘!
