De fado hausse van de jaren negentig heeft veel nieuwe fado sterren voortgebracht waarvan Cristina Branco en Mariza in Nederland wel de bekendste zijn. Dat er nog steeds nieuw talent verschijnt aan de fado horizon, bewijst Isabel «Cuca» Roseta. Een jonge zangeres die met haar tweede cd ‘Raiz‘ (wortels) een brug slaat tussen de traditionele fado en nieuw gecomponeerd repertoire.English version below

Tot haar achttiende hoorde Cuca Roseta in haar ouderlijk huis geen noot fado: het was klassieke muziek waar ze mee opgroeide. Het is fado zanger Carlos Zel die Roseta overtuigt van haar muzikale kwaliteiten. Als psychologie studente neemt ze deel aan het concours ‘Fados no Porto’ en besluit fado te blijven zingen. Ze verhuist uiteindelijk naar Lissabon en ontmoet fado zangeres Ana Moura die haar stimuleert door te gaan. Bovendien wordt zij de vaste zangeres in Clube de Fado waar ze ook filmmuziek componist Gustavo Santaolalla ontmoet, die haar debuut cd produceert.

Binnen de fado signatuur is het gebruikelijk om bestaand repertoire zingen, vóór de jaren ’90 zelfs een ‘must‘. Dat is allang veranderd en daar maakt Cuca Roseta volop gebruik van. Bijna alle stukken op ‘Raiz’ zijn door haar geschreven, zowel tekst als muziek en worden innemend begeleid op guitara Portuguesa en guitarra Coimbra, klassiek gitaar en contrabas. Op twee stukken zelfs aangevuld met strijkers. Dat de fado een veelzijdigheid in zich draagt, bewijst Cuca Roseta met veertien composities die allen een stemming vertegenwoordigen. Zo is Fado Abraço een ‘omhelzing‘, Fado Vaidade een ‘vergiffenis‘ en de tintelende Fado Sentidos, een prikkeling voor de ‘zintuigen‘. Roseta heeft een fris helder natuurlijke stem met een licht vibrato in een stijl die gebaseerd is op ‘rust‘, waarmee ze alle tijd neemt om haar fado verhaal te vertellen. Dat is niet alleen heel prettig om naar te luisteren maar getuigt ook van muzikale volwassenheid. Hiermee wordt ‘Raiz’ het fundament van een jonge fado zangeres waar we nog veel van zullen horen.

The fado explosion of the ’90’s brought new fado stars. Most famous in the Netherlands are Cristina Branco and Mariza. But still some new fado talents show up like Isabel «Cuca» Roseta. A young singer who’s just come up with her second album ‘Raiz’ (roots), building a bridge between the fado tradition and new composed songs.

Cuca Roseta grew up with classical music. It was the fado singer Carlos Zel who inspired her to use her musical qualities. She was a psychology student when she sang at the ‘Fados no Porto’ contest. At that time she decided to keep singing fado, moved to Lisbon and met the fado singer Ana Moura who stimulates her. Besides all, she became a regular singer at Clube de Fado where she met the film composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who produced her début album.

In fado it’s normal to sing traditional repertoire, especially before the ’90’s is was not accustomed. But that changed for years now and Cuca Roseta wrote almost all the songs on her album ‘Raiz’. The music is marvelous accompanied by guitara Portuguesa and guitarra Coimbra, classical guitar en double bass and on two songs strings were added. Fado is a very multilateral music, proved by Cuca Roseta who gave all her songs a kind of mood quality. So for example, Fado Abraço is an ‘embrace‘, Fado Vaidade a ‘absolution‘ and the sparkling Fado Sentidos a stimulus for the ‘senses‘. Cuca Roseta is a fresh and clear singer with a natural sound and a little vibrato. Her style is based on ‘balance‘. She takes her time to tell her splendid fado story. Eager to listen to and very mature. In this way ‘Raiz’ is the foundation, the roots of a young fadista on her way to international fame.
